| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2019 | 9 By Joe Formino, Chairman, District Delegate Assembly On May 3 we had a disaster drill staged by EPAP. The results were scattered district by district— some good, some not so good. It appears over time our residents have lost some of the enthusiasm for our disaster drills. Is it because we have performed the drill every year, or we are tired of the repetition or just didn't want to be bothered? The answer is probably a bit of all the reasons stated. The EPAP disaster drills are for our own safety. Can you imagine if we really had a disaster what would happen without our trained personnel? We would have panic in the streets, people running all over the place looking for help, trying to call for help, but not knowing who to call, and on and on. IT TRULY WOULD BE A DISASTER! Many of us would think this confusion is our own fault. We did not participate, did not want to participate in the drills — with an attitude of "let someone else do it!" It is about time we regroup our people and our District to take care of our own. So, what do we need to do? The first item on the agenda is to get involved. We need volunteers to fill the open positions in every District. Believe it or not, in some Districts we need an EPAP Coordinator. We need Zone Captains and Alternate Zone Captains in most Districts. We certainly need medical personnel. Over the years we have lost almost half of our medical people. Recently EPAP held First Aid classes taught by Linda Myers- Kalb, RN. She does a magnificent job covering all of the topics. It is a six hour Red Cross Certificated course on all types of first aid. It is our hope the residents receiving the certificate will volunteer in their District. Here is the program if a disaster occurs in our complex. Each District Coordinator will be alerted by authorities that EPAP has been activated to help residents. The EPAP Coordinator will reach the District Delegate and together they have a plan to contact all of the Zone Captains in the District. The EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS ACTION PLAN is now activated and will begin to check on everyone of you. YOUR JOB — PLACE YOUR "FILE OF LIFE" CARD IN A FRONT WINDOW IF YOU ARE "ALRIGHT." If the card is not in the window, they will come looking for you presuming you are injured. If you do not have a "FILE OF LIFE" CARD IN A POUCH ON YOUR REFRIGERATOR, GET ONE NOW FROM YOUR EPAP COORDINATOR OR DELEGATE. In any emergency, the firemen are trained to look for the card with your medical info. Obviously, our plan is useless without people. That is where you come in — we need you to volunteer in any capacity to work our plan. In the past we have had hundreds and hundreds of volunteers, now we have less than half. Please call your District EPAP Coordinator or District Delegate and volunteer your help to save lives.
