| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2019 | 19 Safety & Security Advisory At the May Safety and Security Advisory Committee meeting there were hearings on the agenda for five more residents. These hearings are all a result of a failure to display valid overnight parking permits. If your guest enters for the day without indicating they are staying overnight they will be issued a Day Entry Pass. If they decide later in their stay to spend the night, they must return to the main gate and get an Overnight Pass. This pass must be displayed on the dash in clear view so patrol can clearly determine there is a valid pass for this vehicle. If the pass is on the seat, in the console or otherwise not displayed — even if it is a valid pass — they are subject to a citation. Gate passes are issued by humans — they are not generated by robots. Please do not assume the pass is correct. 99 percent of the time it will be, but that 1 percent could be an error to your detriment. REMEMBER: Citations are the responsibility of the homeowner. Your guest might leave the next morning without letting you know of the citation on the windshield and you wouldn't know until you receive notification in the mail. If you are in doubt, please do not hesitate to contact Planning & Compliance staff. ~ Jean Dobson Karen Thompson Walker spoke about human fear and how it can direct our actions. Ms. Walker is the author of the 2012 bestseller, The Age of Miracles. More importantly, she wanted us to consider what we can learn from fear. Her talk began with the whaleship Essex in 1820, whaling in the South Seas off South America. No one on shore knew what occurred, no rescue was available. The trip was not going well, few whales were spotted, morale was poor, the captain had made poor decisions about provisions and ship repairs. One crew member had already jumped ship. Heading towards a new hunting ground farther off the coast, they did spot whales. Then a large male whale was spotted but it acted strangely — swimming right at the ship! The crew did their duty, they tried to harpoon the whale but they also considered the ship might be harmed because of these actions. Finally the whale ran its head into the bow causing a leak and the ship started to sink. Fear had taken root. They had little time to transfer supplies into the smaller whaling boats but were able to rig some rudimentary masts and sails. The closest land were the Marqueesa islands but sailors argued they had heard the natives were cannibals. South America was next closest land but they could not sail against the prevailing winds. They had to sail south first to catch the tradewinds then to land — nearly 3,000 miles. With not enough food or water, crew started dying. Those alive had no choice but to cannibalize those already dead. Less than half the crew were found drifting some three months later. Two rescued crew members later wrote of the Essex's travails. Herman Melville read one and saw the beginnings of the story Moby Dick. Fear can focus and mobilize us, make us decisive and adapt to an unknown situation. We may however also be paralyzed and make no decisions. Walker goes further — fears have a character, a plot, they make us think into the future. She proposes the benefit of turning our "fears" into stories… stories that show how events can impact other future events and guide us to solutions. In this way, fear can be a gift to our imaginations, leading us to insight, wisdom, and the truth.
