36 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2019 Tails & Trails - All Pets HELPFUL TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH YOUR PET You don't have to leave your pet behind when taking a family vacation. You can take your pet on a road trip or stay the night with them in a pet-friendly hotel. To make traveling with your pet more enjoyable, there is some planning that should take place. Take your pet to the vet for a checkup. Before your trip, make sure your pet's vaccinations are up-to-date. You may have to show a health certificate, signed by an licensed veterinarian, when traveling across state or international borders. Make sure your pet's crate has proper ID. Anything can happen on vacation, which is why it's important to take precautions. Never leave your pet alone in a parked car. Make sure you are providing them with fresh water and only exercising with them in the morning, evening, or on shady trails. It is critical that you protect your pet at all times and especially when traveling. Before you book your hotel, make sure you secure pet-friendly accommodations. Pack a separate bag for your pet. Make sure you have all of your pet's essential items: food, water bowl, medications, protective clothing, pet sunscreen, flea comb, and tick remover. But most of all, don't forget your poop bags. You don't want to leave a bad impression when traveling. Also, don't leave your dog in the hotel room. Make sure, prior to your daily excursions, that pets are allowed at the points of interest you plan to visit. Aside from traveling by car or air, did you know that nearly four million RV owners travel with their pets each year? With some advance planning, you can keep your pet happy and safe in your RV. Let your pet examine and sniff your RV before you leave so the surroundings are familiar. Decide whether to restrain your pet. Check out the variety of restraint choices (crates/ seatbelts/adapters, etc.) that are available. Know the pet policies of the campgrounds you intend to visit. Take familiar pet items (bed/blanket/toys) with you. To avoid possible digestive issues, bring food and water from home. Plan plenty of stops for your pet. Bring a supply of paper towels, rags, carpet and upholstery cleaners for accidents. Finally, instead of leaving your pet alone in the RV for extended periods of time, research pet day care where you will be staying for the well-being of your pet. By following these simple tips regarding proper equipment, planning, and care when traveling, there's no reason to leave your best friend behind when you go on vacation. ~ Vivian Walker, vivr@ sbcglobal.net
