| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | JULY 2019 | 33 Question: What is the VA Aid & Attendance benefit program? The Aid & Attendance is designed to help veterans and their surviving spouses pay for costs associated with in-home caregivers, assisted living, long-term skilled nursing and adult day care. Those who are eligible are if you or your spouse was a veteran during a period of war? Do you need help with your activities of daily living (ADLs)? Are you paying a family member to help care for you or an in-home care agency or an assisted living? Things used to determine eligibility: 1) Are you a wartime veteran or a surviving spouse who is 65 years old or older or permanently disabled in need of assisted living or in-home care? 2) The Veteran must have served at least 90 continuous days of active duty with at least one of those days during time of war. 3) The Veteran must have received an honorable, general or medical discharge. The wartime eligibility dates of service are: World War II: 12/07/1941 - 12/31/1946 Korean War: 6/27/1950 - 1/31/1955 Vietnam I (must have been in country): 2/28/1961 -8/05/1964 Vietnam II: 08/05/1964 - 05/07/1975 Mideast Conflicts: 08/20/1990 to present Maximum monthly benefit for your care as of January 2019: Veteran Couple: $2,984 Veteran plus Spouse: $2,230 Single Veteran: $1,881 Surviving Spouse: $1,209 There is also another veteran program called the Homemaker program and this is ONLY for the veteran. The VA Homemaker program is available to all qualifying veterans who are enrolled in VA Healthcare. This is a service for veterans who have a "clinical need" for help with basic daily living activities. To be considered for the VA Homemaker benefit, the veteran must first apply for and be approved to receive VA Standard Medical Benefits.
