| OHCC LIVING | JULY 2019 | 39 Despite our June gloom, the Tennis Club began with a lively Team Tennis Event held on June 2 with 25 intrepid players participating on four teams. Shannon Johnston and Lorraine Kleeman designed a Team Tennis format, with four teams representing San Diego (Aviators), Orange County (Breakers), Las Vegas (Rollers), and Orlando (Storm). From the list of volunteers to play, four captains chose balanced teams. Bob Clarke's Rollers included Patti Coffey, Lorraine Kleeman, Fred McGarvey and Chris Burdy. The Orange County Breakers, under Sally Palmer as captain were Terrell Campbell, Paula Burdy, Chi Chong Lee, and Jack Pivo. Jim Baker chose Lisa Young, Pam Green, Al Harruf, Ron Boran and Alan Singer for the Orlando Storm team. Finally, the San Diego Aviators were coached by Captain Kathy Moscovitz with players Debi Vail, Judy Gagnon, Tweed Ross, and Leo Lagasse. At the end of six rounds of four games each of mixed doubles, ladie's doubles, and men's doubles, the first place winner was the Aviators Team with 15 games. All three of the other teams were tied at 11 each. A final mixed doubles was held and the Las Vegas Rollers came in second behind the Aviators! At the luncheon following, catered by Mama Lyn, the winning team members got embroidered towels with tennis racquets/ balls done beautifully by Kathy Moskovitz. Second-place received a new can of tennis balls. Paddle tennis continues to be enjoyed by both long-time players and new players learning the game. The Monday 2 to 4 pm drop-in time at the HOA Courts four and five is getting 10-12 participants each week for rotation of players on both courts. Once a month, the group goes for pizza afterwards at Grand Slam Pizza. All players are enjoying this resurgence of interest in the sport, thanks to committee members, Sally Palmer, Allan Singer, and Brenda Stafford – all paddle tennis enthusiasts! Badminton play has begun on Wednesday evenings as of June 5, at 6:30 pm at the Clubhouse courts. Both instruction and play are organized throughout the evening. The instructors are Gerry Livsey and Cliff Singh. They present skills on one court for new players and set up games on the other courts for returning players. Play continues throughout the summer approximately every other Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm. All equipment is provided. Summer pickleball classes continue at Tennis Court One, 9:30 to 11:15 am.
