FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2019 53 Tennis Club The Tennis Club's annual, mostly non-partisan, Red/Blue team competition was a great success. This year we played on the final Saturday of June, instead of on July 4th. We had 28 players altogether and two teams of 13 players each, with one sub available. At the end of four rounds, with each player getting to play a total of 32 games, the Red Team came out victorious with a team total of 105 games won. The Blue Team won 103 games, so each game turned out to be important to the eventual outcome. The Red Team, captained by Larry Martin, included Bernadette Martin, Barbara Miller, Brian Flowers, Den Stevens, Howard Levine, Jocelyn Green, Julie Stayner, Lizzie Gallegos, Loren DuChesne, Randy Haemmerle, Sam Savy, Stan Lam and Tim Jones. As in T-Ball, we want to recognize all participants, even the lowly losers: the Blue Team members were Captain Chuck Beckman, Alex Castanon, Alfred Blair, Chikako Ferguson, Darell Imoe, Dennis Gunnerson, Hilario Luna, Larry Workman, Padoo Peralta, Perry White, Rebecca Flowers, Tina Soeten, and Steve Hovey. Victor Flores was our super sub, playing wherever needed. The players with the most individual wins were Julie Stayner and Chikako Ferguson for the women with each winning 22 games. For the men, there were three tied for the top spot with 19 games to their credit: Tim Jones, Alfred Blair, and Perry White. Unfortunately, the HOA only provides one trophy per gender. Perry was at the awards ceremony, so he picked up the men's trophy; good luck to Tim and Alfred in getting him to share. And for the women, Padoo grabbed the trophy, so Chikako and Julie can try to pry it out of her hands. The reprised Tennis Club summer evening doubles matches have been a success. Scheduled for the second and third Wednesdays of the month, interested players will be able to sign up and have matches and teams arranged. Matches will be scheduled for 6 and 7 pm. Two courts will be used for the 6 pm start time and two courts for the 7 pm start time, so matches can continue longer than the one-hour format of previous summers. It is planned that each match will be two sets, and, in the event of split sets, a 10-point tie-breaker will be played. If the weather is as nice in August as it was in July, evening tennis should be a lot of fun. ~ Steven Hovey, sahovey47@hotmail. com Stan returns serve and Jocelyn moves to the net Chuck checks the line-up A big trophy for the Red Team
