FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2019 61 Our summer tournament and potluck had an amazing turnout with more than 24 people vying for the championship. After enjoying a delicious potluck with many different delicacies, the six teams of four each took to the courts for the single-elimination tourney. The team of Ron Erickson, Mary Ann Diehl, John McFarlane, and Gary Christie took first-place but only after defeating the team of Bill Baker, Macy Chen, Jack Biersdorfer, and Kris Corbett. Jeannine Baker, Bocce Ball secretary, complimented the group, as well as Jackie Morris and Margi and Jack Spies, for their contributions to the tournament. "Thanks to all for the good food and camaraderie - it turned out to be a fun tournament. Thanks again, Jackie, for organizing our bocce ball brunch. Thank you, Marji, for arranging and setting up the potluck. And Jack, thank you for an excellent job of refereeing the tournament. You all did a great job!" We play at The Summit on Tuesdays at 9 am, and on Wednesdays and Fridays at 5 pm. On Fridays, we have a TGIF mini potluck (we obviously like our food, refreshments, and Bocce) at 4:15 pm. Everyone is welcome. New players are introduced quickly to the rules and best strategies. Our tournament-grade courts and sideboards are surrounded by smooth concrete with a small step-in. There are handicap-accessible ramps and other players to help pick up balls, if needed. Teams are picked for each court by random draw. The word "bocce" comes from an Italian word meaning "to bowl." The small white ball, called the "pallino," is thrown first to start the game. The rules are simple — get your ball as close to the pallino as possible to score a point. If more balls of the same color get close, these additionally score points. Games are usually played to 12 points, and two games usually take about one and a half hours. Bocce Ball requires no specific skills or previous experience. You will get a little exercise, enjoy beautiful views and breezes at The Summit, and have a great time with a wonderful group of people. If you are interested in learning the game, please join us.
