| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | AUGUST 2019 | 33 handyman tips Easy tips you can do to keep things working in your home. An earthquake can burn down your house. You saw it on TV July 4 and 5 in Ridgecrest CA. These were big quakes (6.4 and 7.1), but even a small one 3.1 + can do it. Three things you should do right after an earthquake: 1. Look at your water heater gas line. The one that comes from the gas pipe in the wall to your heater. Check if it has broken or is leaking. If it is, turn off the valve at the wall, so the bar valve is perpendicular to the pipe. If it is still leaking take a wrench or pliers and turn off the gas at the meter. Again the bar valve should be perpendicular to the pipe. I know, because we lived 10 miles from the epicenter of the Sylmar Quake (7.4) in 1972 and after getting out of the house as quick as we could, I returned two minutes later to check for damage. I smelled gas and as I ran pass the laundry room (our water heater was in this room), the gas smell was potent. I ran into the garage, grabbed a wrench, went out the garage side door to the gas meter and turned it off. We later discovered that the water heater gas flex line had split open. 2. Turn off the main breaker switch in your outside electrical panel, if you have damage or a gas or water leak. This will stop any electrical short from starting a fire. 3. Go to were your return air vent (in the hallway) and smell for a gas leak or an unusual sound. If you smell gas turn off the gas at the meter outside. If it does not sound quite right, turn off the gas meter and the electrical main breaker. We need homeowners to take photos of the beautiful vistas in Four Seasons Hemet!
