This will address our poor drainage on those holes. Here is a little history on the channel project: In 2016/17 the Board retained and approved the design plan by Jester Designs and Pinnacle Landscape for the Turf Reduction cut line areas. We selected Webb Engineering out of Riverside to produce a working set of drawings so a drainage contractor could be chosen. An irrigation consultant was retained for the design of the golf course irrigation system to coincide with the turf reduction plan. Once these were retained, RFP's could be produced. Based on the time of year, construction could begin for each segment. This is important as it is hard to kill Bermuda grass in the winter and you do not want your irrigation system compromised in the summer so you would work opposite those times. That was then and this is now: Last year an RFP went out to select a contractor to work on the channel, however, it was delayed due to the #9 lake, the back of the range enhancement, new south range tee cart path and the #9 plantings took priority. The Board retained Michael Baker out of Irvine to mediate a contract with a contractor for the Channel project to start summer 2019. In May, we started to kill off the turf areas on holes 14-16 as well as removed any existing trees that unfortunately existed in the "new" channel. Please keep in mind that 43 trees/palms were slated to come out and we were able to work with the engineer and cut that number to 22. The course irrigation replacement which has been put on hold for two+ years now has a clear direction, and as more turf areas come on board the new irrigation lines would be put where the still have grass. We also have tried to communicate to the 151 homeowners along those holes via a letter as well as advertised the channel, kill of turf and irrigation on the Sun Lakes website. Our current yearly water bill is over $1,000,000 and going up. Not a typo! The turf area to be removed on holes #14-16 is approximately 355,000 sf. Turf demand is 47 ac-ft, per year. Drought tolerant plants are .9 ac-ft, per year. Turfgrass water needs for 355,000 sf is 16,692 ccf per year @ 2.72/ccf or $45,402. Drought tolerant plants for 355,000 sf is 3,177 ccf @ 2.72 per ccf or $8,642. The master plan calls for 58.4 acres to be reduced. The championship golf course is roughly 180 acres. This would leave us around 120 acres. As a comparison a Palm Springs target course is around 90 acres. A water cost analysis for the completed 58 acres of reduction for 10 years would be an estimated savings of $3.7 million. This is based on the city raising rates five percent a year along with the decrease of water. The channel project is slated to be done around Oct. 1 pending weather. During construction please look at daily course conditions for updates and for any hole closures. Please remember your ID cards when paying for golf and for merchandise in the golf shops. GOLF RULE OF THE MONTH: #7 Pets of any kind are prohibited from being on the golf course and practice facilities TEE SAND BUCKET REMINDER: We are noticing that when players hit off par 3 tees and take divots the provided sand buckets are not being used. This is very noticeable on holes #5, #12, #17 executive. If you take a divot please fill in the divot with sand, this will heal the spot much quicker and leave us with a more level tee CHARITY WEEK SHIRTS: We have some Charity Week shirts still available and we are lowering the price to $10.
