Hold Your Horses! District 14, aka "The Island," held a
barbecue and horse racing derby at the South Clubhouse.
The grandstands were packed, and the fans cheered for
their favorite jockeys racing three exciting races. The
early favorite at post time, was delegate Ev Hawkins (the
smallest jockey), who ran out of the money, finishing
dead last in each race.
Winning the first race handily was Paul Reneau.
Brandon Nemire was declared winner of the second
race. The biggest jockey, Steve Van Loon, blew away the
field by winning the last race. Some say the fix was in.
Bettors lucky enough to be holding winning tickets, were
rewarded with beautiful gift bags prepared by Suellen
Jackson, who also designed and made the race horses.
The delicious barbecue was prepared and served
by Thomas Catering. Dix Hennecke kept the stands
engaged with fun music and calls as MC and DJ. Kudos to
the Social Committee for a job well done: Robin Nemire,
Suellen Jackson, Aurora Huesca, Connie Reinecker, Bev
Reneau, and Bev Sparks. Recording the event with many
exciting photos was Patrick Kelley.
There were 75 residents from District 14 in attendance,
who had a wonderful fun evening. All are looking
forward to the next social event.
