Meteor Showers
By Clare Mendez, Resident
I am not a superstitious person, but I do like to think I
can change my fate with a wish upon a star now and then. I
walk under ladders, and I don't fret if I break a mirror, but in
August each year I turn the tides in my favor when the meteor
showers appear in the northern hemisphere.
Setting my alarm clock for 3 am, I place my lawn chair in the
back yard and stare up at the sky. Each meteor, or "shooting
star," I see is a chance for me to make a wish. Some are very
basic wishes like good health or to win the lottery. Depending
on how many stars I see, my wishes get more specific.
Last year, however, I was a bit rattled by a light that wasn't
zipping across the sky nor was it moving slowly like an
airplane. It just hovered above me and I could see an intense
white light on one side. I watched this object pass over me
rather slowly as thoughts of an alien ship also crossed my
mind. What if? I decided not to tempt my fate and called it a
night, dashing quite quickly into the house.
If you are interested in watching the meteor shower this
year it will be on August 12. Most likely I will be outside
making my wishes with the hopes that the aliens will have
better choices to make than to take me. If you are abducted
by the little green men, I will say a wish for your safe return.
Please do the same for me if I am the chosen one.
