22 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2019 | Italy is the leading wine producing country in the world, going back and forth with France, but currently on top. (The USA is fourth currently, behind Spain.) One popular region for wine is the Veneto, which is in northeastern Italy, reaching from the beautiful Dolomite mountain range, part of the Alps, to the Adriatic Sea. The best-known city in the Veneto is Venice, but not a lot of wine can be grown in a city built on pilings in the middle of a lagoon. Shakespeare certainly heard of the Veneto – he based some of his greatest plays in the area - Romeo and Juliet, and The Merchant of Venice, for example. Three principal wine growing areas are found in the Veneto. The first is the Laguna DOC, found near Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. Laguna produces only white wine, from a grape unique to this area, called Trebbiano di Lugana. These can be had from $10 to $15 a bottle at many places. The second is the Bardolino DOC, also near Lake Garda. This zone makes nearly all red wines, from native grapes Corvina and Rondinella. Similar in price to Laguna, these wines will do better with a little chilling during summer months. It can be found easily. The third region is Soave, east of Verona, which has a complicated history. Initially, the native grape Garganega was used to produce insanely popular white wine (Soave Bolla, anyone?) but the area had an unfortunate history of too rapid expansion of wine growing, which included use of grapes that weren't native to the area and are not so good to blend with Garganega. If you see Soave DOC, Soave Classico DOC, or Soave Colli Sclaigeri DOC, you will get at least 70 percent of the good stuff (Garganega). Also, if you see Soave Superiore DOCG, Soave Classico Superiore DOCG or Soave Superiore Riserva DOCG, you are getting at least 70 percent of Garganega. All of these are higher end white wines. But, what about Prosecco? It's extremely popular in the US as a less expensive alternative to Champagne, and it also comes from the Veneto, around the city of Treviso, near Venice. It's a popular 'welcome wine' among Ocean Hills Wine Tasting Club group members, to give the members a wine to sip while socializing before tasting the wines planned for the evening's theme. Wine Tasting Club Our summer break is over so now we will return to the serious business of taking, displaying and critiquing photographs. The first meeting of the fall will be on Thurs., Aug. 15. All club members are invited to submit pictures that illustrate their summer activities from the previous two months. All subjects are acceptable as long as they relate to your choice of summer vacation activity. The accompanying photo of a castle could be one of a series based on travels in Southern England, visiting historic sites. Bud has already announced the requirements for submission, which are to send him up to five images for a Show and Tell, by the end-of- day, Sun., Aug. 11. We expect this to be a popular meeting so plan to spend no more than four minutes describing your work. Photography
