38 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2019 | Our Summer Tournaments began on June 27, with the special version of 8-Ball known as "Key-Ball." "What's that," you say? Just ask any of us when you have a few minutes. Well, quite a few minutes. There were 11 "A" players and 15 "B" players that started off at 1:30 pm. With an additional dozen spectators and lots of oldies music it was a lively scene. The "A" match started off with a first-round upset as Dan "Kid" Wilkerson took down the number one seed Charlie "Big Tuna" Payne. Actually, Charlie took himself down when he called and sank the 8-Ball… and the cue ball. Dan's next opponent was Jack "Dead Eye" Woolley, who called and sank the 8-Ball… and the cue ball! Dan was just promoted from the "B" group, and had not realized how easy these "A" players were. He went on to win his semi-final match "honestly," and presto! – he was in the finals. And there the fairy tale ended as he in turn was taken down by the formidable Gary "Gabby" Pelcher for the win. For the first time that anyone can remember the "B" match was dominated by the ladies. In the first round there were six ladies and nine men. But in the quarter-final round of eight, there were four ladies and four men. In the semi-final round, there were three ladies and one (now very lonesome) man. And BOTH finalists were ladies. In all, there were six matches in which a lady played a man. The ladies won five of the six. The winner was Jeanne "Quick Jab" Marks who defeated Janice "Pistol" Pelcher. (Yes, "Pistol" is related to "Gabby.") The month of August will bring some great opportunities to learn more about playing pool and improving your game. Billiards Club A Match Finalists Dan Wilkerson and Gary Pelcher 8-Ball (Key Ball) Champions Jeanne Marks (B) and Gary Pelcher (A) Club B Match Finalists Jeanne Marks and Janice Pelcher The very popular Ocean Hills Golf Club venue that offers our golfers an outing for mixed couples is the Guys And Dolls nine times a year. Guys and Dolls tournaments are played once a month beginning in February continuing through November, typically on Saturdays. There must be two ladies and two gentlemen on each team. The cost is $5 per person. In addition, if you do not have your own foursome they will help arrange to fill in your team. Initially, sign-ups begin early January for the February Tournament, and then on the day after the last Guys and Dolls Tournament. This event is offered to all registered OHGC golfers who have a current handicap on our course. Your handicap can be developed by playing five rounds of golf on our golf course with a current member of the club as a witness. Your handicap also allows you to play in all of the other venues offered throughout the year at our club (eg. Mens/Ladies Tournaments, most Match Play events, Touring Amateurs, etc.). All of the above use the same Golf Casa computer database built by our very own Scott Sloan to track handicaps as well as provide scoring for each event. A little history; I couldn't find out much of the original history but recent history of this event since 2009 has been the dynamic duo of Tom and Marilyn Vetlesen. Prior to that Jim and Darlene Piercy and Dan and Bobbie Elexson ran the event in 2005, and Ron and Margie Stogdill in 2008. Volunteerism is alive and well in Ocean Hills, especially in the golf community! When you see an obvious volunteer please stop and say thank you from the collective residents of the Village. Questions? Call your hosts Marilyn and Tom Vetlesen at (760) 940-0321 or email them at mavetlesen@sbcglobal.net. The format is always a scramble, LN and is always a lot of fun. Popcorn is served at the Casa and soft drinks may be purchased at the Golf Casa. Come and enjoy! Golf Club
