Birdwatchers
Although there will be no official club meeting in September, we
will be going on a birding walk on Sept. 17, to Buddy Todd Park in
Oceanside, about 30 minutes from Ocean Hills. This hilltop urban
park is a 19 acre "sky island" of tall pines and eucalyptus about three
miles inland from the beach. The trees and the moist cool upland
slope climate attract many interesting birds in migration. April-May
and September-October are best for a chance to see rare Neotropical
migrants: warblers, vireos, tanagers, grosbeaks, and flycatchers. In
winter you might look for Red-breasted or Red-nape Sapsuckers,
Brown Creepers, and American Robins. In certain years red
crossbills, Clark's nutcrackers, and nuthatches are seen. As always,
wear good walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. Bring water. The
trail is an easy paved walk through lush lawns and picnic areas with
plenty of shade. Restrooms are available.
Meet at the overflow lot at 7:45 am for an 8 am departure. Maps
and directions will be provided then. Lunch will be discussed as
well. Please remember to reimburse your driver if carpooling. If you
are not a birdwatchers member but are curious about our walks, this
one would be perfect for you. Hope to see you there!
Attached are some photos of birds we may see.
