The OHCC Billiards Club tournament for July was Straight Pool,
which was made famous in the 1961 movie The Hustler starring Paul
Newman and Jackie Gleason.
This game tends to promote long runs of continuously potted
balls as you can sink any ball remaining on the table. The ability to
control the cue ball is an advantage.
On July 25, we had 12 members in the room ready for battle. The
"B" skill players were given the handicap of doubling their score after
two racks, while the "A" skill players played net. The brackets were set
so that all "A" players would play a "B" player in the first round. The
results were 11 matches played during the tournament where five
were won by "A" players and five won by "B" players, with one match a
"B" versus "B." Once again our handicap seems to work.
Brad Arens, a new "B" player, on his way to the final match defeated
Kieth Bogost, Rick Pesco, and Charlie Payne.
Meanwhile, Gary Pelcher, an "A" skill player often seen playing
the game, won over Gil Moe and Alan Belisle. In the championship
round, Gary won over Brad as Gary's control of the cue ball seldom
gave Brad a shot.
To add some spice to the game and to promote long runs, it was
decided to give a dollar per ball to "B" players who sank at least
four balls in succession, and to "A" players who sank at least eight in
succession. Brad Arens won $5 and Charlie Payne won $9.
The club recently asked the membership to adopt a table for
monthly maintenance. Here is Leo Beeloo vacuuming his table #6
while the balls are being cleaned in our new ball cleaner. Thanks
to Leo and all the table captains for keeping our pool room looking
sharp!
