The front lawn of the Civic Center is a great place to watch the exciting starts and finishes. The Hand Cycle Race begins at 7:45 am, the Men's Race at 9:15 am and the Women's Race at 9:25 am. For information on routes, road closures and spectator areas, please visit www.ci.beaumont.ca.us/bikerace. Cowbells are back at the bike race by popular demand. The Bike Race Team will be traveling the course on race day looking for enthusiastic spectators. Cowbells will be given out to those people supporting riders. Show your support; bring home a cowbell! If you are interested in signing up as a race marshal to help keep vehicles off the course when bicycles are in the vicinity, help with pedestrian control and assist commuters in reaching their destinations while navigating different routes, please call Greg or Marilyn Barker at (951) 845-7749 or email gm202@ verizon.net. You must be at least 16 years of age and will need to fill out a volunteer registration form. Race marshal training will be provided prior to the event by law enforcement personnel and representatives from the Redlands Bicycle Classic. Another service of Beaumont City is the low-cost Animal Care Clinic offered at the Civic Center on Saturday, April 6, from 9 to 11 am. Beaumont cares about the two-legged and the fourlegged residents! Plan to attend the general session of the HOA Board of Directors on Thursday, April 11, at 1 pm in the Ballroom. This is a busy month as we are electing a Board Member and planning for the use of the newly available previous Sales Office. Beaumont's Lunch and Learn program is also on Thursday, April 11, at 11 am in the Albert A. Chatigny Community Center, 1310 Oak Valley Parkway. The featured speaker is Teresa Rivera with Cal Fresh who will present information on nutrition and will show a short video on "Home One Pot Meals" and "Preparing Meals with what you have on hand." Reservations are required. To reserve your seat, call the Beaumont Senior Center, (951) 769-8539. On Monday,April 30, the City of Beaumont and the BeaumontCherry Valley Recreation and Park District will plant 16 trees to commemorate the Greening of Beaumont. The tree-planting event actually pays homage to Arbor Day, an unofficial holiday celebrated on the last Friday of April throughout the United States. The public is invited to Beaumont's centennial deodar in the Donna Franco Gardens at the Noble Creek Park. New telephone scams are surfacing in Southern California. One targets California Edison customers. Imposters tell customers that they must make immediate payments on past due bills or have their electric service disconnected. The callers also demand that payment be made through prepaid cash cards or with credit cards. Another scam involves "businesses" going by the name of Senior Emergency Care, Senior Safety Alert or Senior Benefits Program. This one involves a pre-recorded telemarketing call pitching a personal alarm system. The call tries to instill a feeling of panic but claims that you get an alarm system worth several hundred dollars installed free. You will only be responsible for a monthly charge of about $30. Be on the alert for these scams. Senior communities are particularly vulnerable. I have received two of these "Senior Alerts" in the past week – but they do not respond to their instruction of press #1. I had planned to ask for their name and telephone number! They, obviously, do not respond – and, when I did reach a young man on the phone, he vehemently denied that it was a scam. But he had also determinedly not given me a telephone number and caller identification. The Beaumont Senior Newsletter for March and April had a very useful home safety tip. To provide additional safety at night, you may want to put your car keys beside your bed. If you hear a noise, just press the panic button for your car. This sets off the alarm on your car and the horn will continue to sound until you either turn it off or the car battery dies. The sound alone will provide a deterrent for an intruder and your neighbors becoming aware that something is amiss will add to the protection. While you are thinking ahead about Beaumont events, mark your calendar for the Breezin Through Beaumont 5k/10k race on May 18. Watch for more information in the May Breeze. Make it a great April!
