Ping Pong Club Last month our Ping Pong Club and our Paddle Tennis Club joined together to host a wonderful potluck dinner. This social event was held in our beautiful Ballroom and attended by almost all our players and their wives. We knew we had some amazing players in both sports but it turns out that some of our wives and some of our players also have amazing culinary skills. Everyone enjoyed the food and dinner talk immensely. After all the food was sampled, we each voted for our favorite dish. The competition was keen but at last when we tallied the votes, we had first, second, and third place winners. The winner turned out to be Carmen Gardner. Her marvelous dish was a dessert named Hobo Cake. Carmen was generous enough to share her recipe with us and we have included it here. It's a winner so hopefully you will want to try it and put it in your recipe book. Hobo Cake 1 cup sugar, 2 cups flour, 2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 sticks of butter (melted ), 3 eggs, 1 20 oz can crushed pineapple. Melt butter add to all ingredients. Stir by hand - do not beat. Pour into 9" x 13" greased pan. Topping: 1 cup brown sugar, crumbled, 1 cup chopped nuts. Sprinkle topping over cake and bake at 350° for 50 to 60 minutes. Serve with whipped cream. ~ Niles Sundstrom 4x4 Seasons The weekend of March 1, had a few of our members, Greg Dash and Rick and Jamie Brower, participating in the 51st running of the Tierra del Sol Desert Safari. This was a fun filled and educational event that will be a scheduled event for the 4 x 4 Seasons Group next year. Our next group outing will be April 1 through April 6, at Death Valley. George Johnson is coordinating this trip and has planned off road trips to the Race Track and Scotty's Castle, as well as a few other historical and beautiful areas in Death Valley. Don't forget your camera, since the wild flowers should be blooming. The next 4 x 4 Seasons meeting will be April 9, at 7 pm in the Arts and Crafts Room. Come and join us to see what this new club is all about. For additional information contact Rick Brower, jamiebbad@aol.com; George Johnson, gjohnson23@dc.rr.com, or Ann Williams, wilymz@att.net. ~ Ann Williams Potluck winners (L-R): Alan Chan, 2nd place, Carmen Gardner, 1st place, and Marleen Doyle, 3rd place. Racquet Club March 5, was our third annual renewal at the BNP Paribas in warm and sunny Indian Wells. In addition to our core group of volunteers, Padoo Peralta, Louise Lyon, Sonia Tamplin, Tina Soeten, Arlene Malkin and Pam Mayoral, we had three who carpooled with Howard Lyon, Irve Sturner, Ken Elliott and Barbara Miller. We also saw Jo and Randy Fedorchuk, Tanya and Bill Guy and may have missed others who said they planned on attending. Many of us regrouped for lunch in the food court after watching the spectacular world class players practicing and competing — it underscores the reason club players are referred to as "hackers." Let's hear it for the women who organized a thank you and tribute dinner for Cheryl Smith at Isabella's in February. Connie Johnson organized the event with a terrific turnout — Yvette Thomas, Marcia Olson, Marilyn Sarchett, Diane Gray, Lynette and Jack Simonson, twins Mal and Val Smith, Gordon and Pat Shepard, Teri Jackson, Bonnie Weiss and guest of honor Cheryl! Rick Brower and the monster. Lots of laughs, reminiscing, hugs plus mementos, cards and gifts for their honoree. Well done, ladies! Fast tracking: The new ball machine totally amped with our members — from Howard Lyon's "spot-on" equipment presentation, Barbara Miller's extraordinary fund raising and now rapid-fire instruction and training for 25 of our 29 contributors. Thank you, members, thank you! Here's an oncourt refrain we haven't heard for awhile, "Oh, Donny!" but maybe soon. Don Cummings returned home on March 10, to continue his recovery from the very difficult pneumonia which nearly claimed his life. We'll be pulling for you, Don, and can't wait to hear your other familiar phrase, "…watch the ball right into your racket." Play days are directly ahead, March 30, we'll begin with warm-ups and drills at 9 am and then breaking into doubles play — all of which will repeated on April 27, same start time and same format. Will you be blessed with a grandchild visit during spring break? ~ Ken Elliott Pickleball "What a great sport this is… This is just so much fun!" These are the comments of everyone that tries Pickleball. If you haven't come out yet, you have really missed all the fun of the fastest growing sport in Four Seasons. Once again, my thanks to all the die-hard players who have endured less than ideal conditions the last few months. You just can't keep pickleball players away from the courts. Uh-oh… here we go again! I am updating the updated update. What that means is that, for the third time, we have a new date for the completion of the lines on the courts. That date is May 1, but there is hope that it will be done before that. Besides the painting of the lines, I have put in a request for additional benches. We have too many players for the two benches that we have currently. We also are supposed to get an additional umbrella for a total of two. These umbrellas are supposed to be made of a heavy duty commercial material. That is good news as we know the warm weather has to come back some day. So come on out and enjoy the game with us. Like I said before, this is the ideal sport for the novice and the experienced player alike. We have many levels of expertise and there is always someone on the court ready and willing to help any new player. We have extra equipment so just get on out there. No more excuses. Try it! You'll love it… guaranteed. Our scheduled days are Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 10 am. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Linda at (951) 797-3939 or email me at lbsnipes@yahoo.com. See you on the courts! ~ Linda Snipes Paddle Ball Our play days are Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 2 to 4 pm. Come and join us for exercise, fun and friendship. For more information please contact Alan Chan at (951) 769-4202 or Jim Cochran at (951) 769-5525. ~ Alan Chan 38 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2013 | sports Activities SPORTS ACTIVITIES | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2013 39
