Congratulations to Howard Lyon and Steve Bennett, both long-time members of the Four Seasons Motorcycle Club, for recently completing the 44th annual Three Flags Classic motorcycle ride. This event is organized by the SCMA (Southern California Motorcycling Association), and as the name of the ride implies, three countries are involved. The ride starts in San Luis Rio, Mexico, then on through the good old USA, and finishes in Vernon B.C., Canada; that's roughly 2,000 miles. The Three Flags ride is not a race, rather, it's best described as an endurance ride. The only requirement for being officially recognized as a participant is that the ride, from start to finish, must be completed in four days. Do the math. That's a lot of daily miles in the saddle. Howard (BMW R1200RT) and Steve (Harley Davidson Road Glide) headed out from Four Seasons on Aug. 29 for San Luis Rio, fully loaded with gear. The next morning they headed out at 4 am from San Luis Rio on the official start of the Three Flags Classic ride. One aspect of the Three Flags Classic that makes it interesting is that while there are three designated check-in points, riders are free to choose his/her own route. In other words, just make sure you check-in at the designated points along the way, and cross the finish line by 9 pm on the fourth day of riding. Day one ended in Cedar City, Utah; day two took them to Mountain Home, Idaho; day three got them to Wallace, Idaho, and finally to Vernon, B.C. on day four, well ahead of the 9 pm deadline. By the way, every year Howard tells us that he's done participating in the Three Flags Classic, but to no one's surprise, he predictably signs up for the next year's ride. He won't admit it but, he's hooked. For Steve, this was his first Three Flags ride, and we have a hunch it won't be his last. Howard and Steve set a much more leisurely pace on their way back home via Washington and Oregon, taking in the sights. It was quite the motorcycle adventure. Hey Howard and Steve, well done! ~ Jim Ayala, jimrayala95@gmail.com 54 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2019 Motorcycle club They made it!
