FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2019 35 As the seasons change from summer to autumn, days are getting shorter and darker much earlier. We only have a month until we "fall back" on Sunday, Nov. 3, and yay, we get an extra hour of sleep! With the upcoming time change, it's the perfect time to perform some bi-annual tasks around your house. Change the batteries in your smoke detectors and verify that your carbon monoxide alarms are in working order. You have probably heard this before, but it's worth repeating: smoke detectors are useless unless they are in working order. Keeping an emergency kit well stocked at all times is important. Incorporate checking your supplies into your bi-annual routine to ensure your kit is complete. If you have depleted your supply of flashlight batteries, bandages, and other just-in-case items over the past six months, it's time to restock. If you have timers for any lighting, either inside or out, and you prefer your lights to go on and off, they need to be adjusted to fit the new earlier time. Are you prepared? Our September meeting was presented by the Four Seasons Emergency Preparedness Committee and the Riverside Emergency Department. It was very informative and helped us to understand what to do should we encounter an emergency. This past August, Neighborhood Watch held an evening meeting at 6 pm and will again present one on Oct. 9 at 6 pm in the RCN. Going forward, we will offer four meetings a year in the evening beginning next year along with our National Night Out. We hope evening meetings will encourage attendance by our residents who work or are unable to attend our regular 10 am meetings. Looking forward to seeing you at one of the meetings! With it getting dark earlier, and with walking our most popular individual activity, it's good to remind everyone to slow down and stop at stop signs, yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and always yield when entering traffic circles. Please join us Oct. 9 for either of our Neighborhood Watch meetings at 10 am in The Lodge Ballroom or 6 pm in the RCN Main Room. If you see something, say something, by calling the Beaumont Police Department (951) 769-8500. Stay safe and do not confront anyone. ~ Kathy Craven, kathycraven@rocketmail.com Neighborhood Watch
