50 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2019 Now that it is fall and we are expecting cooler weather, we will change our starting time for shuffleboard from 8 am to 9 am on Monday and Saturdays, beginning Saturday, Oct. 5. Come join one of the most fun groups at Four Seasons for a competitive game that is easy to learn and is played in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We are always looking for new people to come and join our group. If you have never played shuffleboard before, come out and give it a chance, as it is not physically demanding and one can become proficient at playing very quickly. After having your breakfast and morning coffee, join us for some light exercise and fresh air. Enjoy our beautiful setting at the shuffleboard courts at The Lodge while playing with a great group of people. Each time we play, we choose different teams,so you are always playing with different partners and getting to socialize with friends and getting to know other Four Seasons residents. Please call Marty Rotman at (310) 948-1693 if you have any questions. ~ Marty Rotman Shuffleboard So, what do we actually do at our meetings on Tuesday mornings at 8 am? First, we weigh-in privately. Then we informally chat with other members about our week. We talk about challenges we faced, successes we had, and failures we lived through. We talk about our families, our activities, new healthy foods we've found, restaurants that have healthy food, and the usual Four Seasons banter. Cathy Calhoun, our chairperson, calls the meeting to order with the flag salute. Next, we have the reports about losers, turtles (those who kept their weight the same), and gainers. Standing up and admitting your successes or failures is totally voluntary. Awards are passed out each month to the biggest losers and those who kept coming for a whole month even if they had a tough week. That's the most important thing, to keep coming to meetings for the support. Without the meeting our minds tell us, "Oh, just go ahead. You'll make up for it next week." But usually we don't and we spiral down into our unhealthy habits. We also recognize those KOPS, Keep Off Pounds Sensibly, who are maintaining their goal weight. They have their own special meetings once a month with other KOPS. Then a speaker presents a program designed to motivate us for the next week. These programs revolve around exercise, motivation, nutrition and food choices. For example, we've practiced yoga and chair exercises, batted a beach ball in the quad, heard about plant- based choices, the best way to hydrate with water, reasons to change our unhealthy habits, easing anxiety, your diet IQ, joint pain, and more. We close the meeting with a pledge to face the coming week inspired by our speaker, our friends, and our new motivation to continue doing things to make us proud of ourselves and to live an active lifestyle as long as possible. Join us today and make a healthy difference in your life, today. We meet Tuesday, 8 am, in The Lodge Ballroom. ~ Andrea Henderson, (918) 497–6491 TOPS
