Fall has somehow arrived whether we like it or not. So many people living here experienced the changing of the leaves on the east coast, the fall season brings about such beautiful memories of their past. Let's hope October in California continues to experience the warmer weather. Water volleyball hours have changed from 3 to 5 pm to 2 to 4 pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This last month has been a scorcher and the pool has provided a welcomed relief from the heat. The Pop-up Services will continue at the request of the Master Board, the trial period has lasted over 7 months, and the activity has been well received. With the consideration of Daylight Savings ending Sun. Nov. 3, the hours have been changed from 12-3 pm. The vendors were notified of the decision to continue, three of the four are willing to come during this time. The Community Services reviewed the services at their last meeting and their recommendation was to end the program and to consider starting it, again, in the spring. As long as the vendors are agreeable to provide the services, the Master Board felt it should continue. Other vendors will be considered. Our thanks to the Woodchuck Club for hosting the Annual Flea Market. We hope everyone enjoyed the treasures, the food and the fellowship. Nothing is better than someone else's junk, a good hot dog, and another knick-knack to dust. Shred Day is Sat., Oct. 19, from 10 am to 1pm. Securitas/ Community Patrol is sponsoring this event, so clean out those desks and closets. The drop-off point will be outside the Front Gate, along Cannon Road (to the left), similar set-up as Is done for the annual decal process. We appreciate Securitas hosting this event. The September Mahjong Tournament headed by Dawn Edwards with the help of her entire team, was a complete success. We thank all the players who participated. A total of 16 games were played by the end of the afternoon. There were a number of happy winners, with handmade sachet favors, and prizes worth every tile thrown. Mahjong is a tile-based game that was developed in China during the Qing dynasty and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. We are hoping this continues to be an annual event as it does take a while to learn the game. Several residents have taken it upon themselves to teach others this complicated but addictive pastime. Flu shots are Wed., Oct. 16 from 1 to 4 pm; pre-registration will be the day before from 2 to 4 pm. Pre-registration is not required but it helps speed up the process. Walgreens is hosting the flu shots and it is a great way to get ahead of the rush. Bring medical insurance cards. Some informative topics being offered this month and next month include: The Braille Institute event on Tues., Oct. 1. They will discuss how to make a meal in a mug. The Tri-City Medical Center Lunch and Lecture is Thurs., Oct. 31 and tickets are available. Tri-City Medical Center is planning more lectures in 2020 and it is beneficial to learn the newest trends in medical care. On Nov. 13, a guest speaker has been invited to speak on Alzheimer's. Susan Miller has written a book called My Life Rearranged. Reservations for 2020 are underway and the next grouping will include the interest groups and card players. The paperwork must be filled out to secure a spot and it will be made available beginning Mon., Oct. 21, at 8 am, outside the Event Coordinator's office. Happy Halloween on the 31st! Come by the Clubhouse and the staff plans to be ready to work in costume; we may even get Ramon Vidrio, our Facilities Supervisor, to dress for the occasion. It's hard to believe Ramon has been working here 29 years on Nov. 2. Congrats to Ramon — that is dedication! The Clubhouse will be hosting the Tri-City Medical Center for their Lunch and Lecture that day, so we hope to have some "tricks and treats" up our sleeves… so watch out!
