38 | OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2019 | Our British members have been playing one of their favorite games called English Billiards. This is a strange quick game with only three balls on the table. There is a common red object ball and two cue balls, one white and one yellow. The object is to earn the most points. In this game you get points for things that are mistakes in most other games. Sink the red ball three points, sink your cue ball off the red three points, sink the opponent's cue ball two points and sink your cue ball two points, carom your cue ball off both of the other balls two points. It is possible to make 10 points off one shot: pot the object ball (three points), carom off the other cue ball (two points) which is sunk (two points), and sink your cue ball (three points). Our tournament was held the day after the Clubhouse re-opened after termite fumigation, and only eight players came. Because most matches require less than 30 minutes, we decided to play to 100 points with the B skill players getting 40 points head start. The first round pitted the three B players (Fred Ganoe, Brad Arens, Leo Belloo) with an A player leaving two A players in the fourth match. Match #1 Gary Pelcher (93 pts) vs Fred Ganoe (100 pts) Match #2 John Mitchell (102 pts) vs Brad Arens (58 pts) Match #3 Charlie Payne (100 pts) vs Leo Belloo (66 pts) Match #4 Roydn Jones (102 pts) vs Cal Roe (58 pts) Semi Final Match #5 Fred Ganoe (78 pts) vs John Mitchell (100 pts) Semi Final Match #6 Roydn Jones (46 pts) vs Charlie Payne (100 pts) Final Match #7 John Mitchell (67 pts) vs Charlie Payne (28 pts) There was an early agreement that if John Mitchell made the finals, the match would end whenever John's wife came to take him away. This should not have been a factor except the first match between Gary and Fred turned into a very strategic contest with much thought (time) given to every shot by both players. Control of the ball placement became the main emphasis, but Fred finally won. The final match between John Mitchell and Charlie Payne started at 3:40 pm, but when Mrs. Mitchell arrived at 4:02 pm the game was called with John ahead 67 to 28. Tournament results: John first, Charlie second, Roydn and Fred tied for third. English Billiards Champion John Mitchell, and runner-up Charlie Payne.
