12 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | OCTOBER 2019 By Dick Roppé, Resident For me there are many challenges. One would be getting up in the morning and getting the kinks out. There was the "Ice Bucket Challenge" that to its credit, raised money for ALS. Even the NFL has challenges. Here is a new challenge for our Solera View readers – "The Reconnect Challenge." Do you have a romantic story that you and your partner share? I'm going to start the challenge with the story of how my wife Lynn and I reconnected. Lynn remembers how we first met but my recollection is a bit hazy. According to Lynn we were at the same fraternity party in college when she heard someone singing and playing the guitar. It was me! Being a singer herself she found me and complimented me on my singing. I don't clearly remember our meeting but Lynn thinks it might have been the beer. Sometime after that we did have our first date. We went out for pizza. Fast forward. After college, when I was in the Navy and she was a flight attendant with TWA, we corresponded and were able to squeeze in a few dates but soon any chance for kindling a romance faded. We each married, had children and that was that. Then in March 2002, when I was reading the obituaries (which I often did when working with my high school reunion committee) I noticed that her mother had passed away. What caught my eye was "survived by daughter Lynn Aeschliman." Lynn had her maiden name again and was back in the area. She must be single! Having divorced in 1983 I had never remarried. So, I waited for the funeral to be over and found her number in the phone book. I called her and said, "Hi, this is a voice from your past." Right away she said, "Well, Dick Roppé, how are you?" Two days later we had our second "first date." We married four months later. For years my mother, who was in poor health at the time and in a care facility, had been after me to remarry. I took Lynn to meet her and two weeks later mom passed away. To this day Lynn and I feel that our mothers played a big part in our reconnecting.
