54 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2019 | The friendliness of pickleballers is so renowned that Carolyn Murphy was staggered to be abruptly dismissed by three young studs at a recent informal tourney when they told her she wasn't welcome on their court. She was so taken aback that she wrote an essay in this month's Pickleball Magazine, available to USAPA members. As a lifelong competitive tennis player and golfer, Carolyn had experienced her share of machismo she says. But pickle is different! It hurt. "I'm a woman of a certain age," says Carolyn and she might have written the episode off to sexism and the macho instinct too many males display. Instead she submitted her article "Dissed on the Pickleball Court." We won't relate the whole thoughtful piece here, but there were a couple of Carolyn's observations that bear repeating. "One of the best things about pickleball is that it's a great equalizer, and one of the most democratic games ever invented. Older folks can play against players half their age, and women and men can compete on equal footing because the game isn't about power, but reflexes and strategy. Perhaps this is why I was so surprised by the snub. I've never had men refuse to play with me." She went on to say, "But what I love most about pickleball is how it makes me feel. I feel like a kid again on the playground, having fun and laughing with opponents, many of whom are now my friends… It's a great time even when you lose-and if you don't laugh, something's wrong." We are delighted this woman of a "certain age" didn't let the rudeness of some youngsters deter her. And we hope her comments about the game will draw more and more players of every age to this unique sports opportunity. Thanks, Carolyn! Our club had many laughs off the courts at the October Tailgate Party at the South Clubhouse. Members and guests enjoyed an informal evening of grilling dogs, games and sharing pics of recent events. The cooler temps are bringing back afternoon play to supplement the club's regular Monday/Wednesday/Saturday morning play. Check in with Judy Luna, evening play coordinator, for the best time slots if you want to learn this great game. Call or text (949) 929-2390. See you on the courts! Pickleball Club
