Sun Lakes Advisory Committee Reports We are happy to see more Advisory Committees submitting articles about the important work they are doing in Sun Lakes. Our goal is to have all active Advisory Committees share their news here each month. Thank you in advance for everyone's participation! Fall is in full swing and we will all be busy getting ready for and enjoying the holidays! Hope to see you in the Main Clubhouse Hardcover library on Nov. 2 from 9 am to 1 pm for a book sale in conjunction with the Fall Craft Show. We all loved Dr. Seuss as kids, again as adults when we had children and grandchildren. Theodore Seuss Geisel (1906-1991) was a writer, poet, and illustrator. A notable educational publisher challenged him to help decrease illiteracy among children in the US and wanted to tell stories that "children couldn't put down." He didn't start with a moral (which he felt turned children off to stories) but did provide a lesson. Dr. Seuss, in the telling of his fantasies, with colorful, excited characters, had many fine lines of poetry or prose which can help us live our lives (or help direct our young heirs). We should all promote the reading of Dr. Seuss! "You are you, now isn't that pleasant?" We can't be anyone else except ourselves. We may wish to change something to improve, but be comfortable in your own skin. "If you've never done it, you really should. These things are fun and fun is good." Try new things. Having fun leads to happy feelings. Feeling good about yourself is key to a successful life. "And will you succeed? Yes you will indeed, 98 and ¾ percent guaranteed." There are no 100 percent guarantees in life but if you're willing to work and you have a positive mindset you have a very good chance of doing it. "Why fit in when you were born to stand out?" We are each of us unique – celebrate that! It is often the easier way to just fit in but it is better to show who you are. "The more that you read, the more that you'll know, the more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Reading helps you learn and it stokes the fires of your imagination. "Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living; it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of the telescope." Sometimes escape into a world that you have dreamed up. You'll learn more about you. "Step with care and great tact. And remember that life's a great balancing act." Step carefully but step! Move forward, be tactful, and keep balance in your life: work and play. Don't be afraid to take on challenges. "Just tell yourself, Duckie, you're really quite lucky!" Compared to the zaniness and mishaps of a Dr. Seuss book, your life could be very lucky indeed. "Think and wonder, wonder and think." Unplug yourself from the media and others who try to put their thoughts in your mind. Allow yourself to think big thoughts. "A person's a person, no matter how small." Everyone deserves the same respect, no matter their size, how they look, or where they live. Library Advisory
