"Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some." ~ Charles Dickens We meet in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom on Nov. 13, 10 am. The guest speaker for this month is David Grinnell and the topic is "HOPE 2020" relating to the Mayflower Float for the 2020 Rose Parade. David is currently an Assistant Historian for the California Mayflower Society and will speak briefly about the Society of Mayflower Descendants organization. November is here, the leaves are falling and it's getting colder and wetter. And as autumn turns to winter, your foremost job in the garden is about protecting plants and structures from the weather. Here are a few things you can do: Insulate your outdoor containers from frosts, using burlap or bubble wrap, held in place with garden twine. Raise pots off the ground for the winter by using bricks or 'pot feet', to prevent waterlogging. Encourage hungry birds into your garden by investing in bird baths and bird feeders. Our feathered friends will keep pest numbers down and bring joy on a bleak winter's day. Protect roses from wind rock by pruning them by one-third to half their height. This is the month some refer to as 'Turkey Day' which is one of the more cherished holidays for families. It's the one day everyone gathers around the table to spend time together, count their blessings, and eat a delicious meal. It's easy to get caught up in the frenzy of Thanksgiving as you are usually having friends and family over for a special Thanksgiving dinner, and you're more than likely busy in the kitchen prepping a delicious turkey, mixing the stuffing, whipping up appetizers, and baking desserts. Even though this is a busy time with all these preparations, hustle and bustle, let us pause a moment to feel grateful and count our blessings. There is always something to be thankful for. It is not what we say about our blessing, but how we use them which is the true measure of our Thanksgiving. Food for thought: not expressing gratitude is like wrapping a present and not giving it. May you enjoy sound health, prosperity, family and friends through the entire season and the smile on your face never fade away. The Garden Club Board would like to wish you a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving. Remember, you don't have to be a gardener to join! Come and visit anytime and see what we are all about.
