44 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2019 | On Nov. 10, the Friendship Club presents, "The Wonderful Wizard of Song: The Music of Harold Arlen," featuring classic songs by the iconic Harold Arlen, composer of the songs of The Wizard of Oz. Created by the composer's son Sam Arlen and singer/pianist George Bugatti, "The Wonderful Wizard of Song" takes the audience on a journey through a series of vignettes, tracing Harold Arlen's career, seamlessly moving through the Cotton Club era to his Hollywood years, and ending with his time on the Great White Way. Movie buffs and music lovers will be treated to inspired renditions of Stormy Weather, Come Rain or Come Shine, Paper Moon, Accentuate the Positive, Let's Fall in Love and the much loved tunes from The Wizard of Oz, including "Over The Rainbow," named by the American Film Institute as the No. 1 in the 100 Greatest American Movie Songs. Woven into the 90-minute musical are inside stories of how some of the world's most beloved songs were created as well as rare behind-the-scene-footage from The Wizard of Oz taken by Harold Arlen himself. Tickets for the show are $20 for members, $25 for non-resident guests. Doors open at 6 pm, show begins at 7 pm. Make checks out to Friendship Club, and deliver them to 5168 Rio Bravo Drive. The Friendship Club Yiddish Culture Club Join us on Wed., Nov. 13 at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom to commemorate Veterans Day. We will show the documentary, GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II, honoring the more than 550,000 Jewish men and women who served in the Armed Forces in WWII. In their own words, veterans both famous (director Mel Brooks, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger) and unknown share their profound and unique war experiences: how they fought for their nation and people, while struggling with anti- Semitism within their ranks. As active participants in the fight against Hitler, bigotry, and intolerance, these brave men and women fought for their nation and their people, for America, and for Jews worldwide. Like all Americans, they fought against fascism, but they also waged a more personal fight — to save their brethren in Europe. After years of struggle, they emerged transformed, more powerfully American and more deeply Jewish, determined to continue the fight for equality and tolerance at home. YCC meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 pm, providing interesting programs for all Sun Lakers. Knowledge of Yiddish is not necessary, since English is the language of the club, and Jews and non-Jews are welcome to join.
