Late fall/early winter is the best time for bulb planting and tree trimming in our Mediterranean Climate Zone⦠and don't forget to prune back those roses so they can rest! Most of us grew up hearing "April showers bring May flowers" but here, our gardening disciplines are much different. While east coast and mid-westerners settle in for long winter naps, forgetting to go outside (except for the mail), our desert climate promises hearty, gorgeous blooms, and thick, lush succulents in February and March. Blanket flower and plant beds with a good helping of protective mulch, (3" deep is ideal in order to prevent nutrients being lost from rain in areas not prone to freezing). Adjust sprinkler timers for less water, less often. Tuck your little blooms in for a peaceful rest, and they will reward you with abundant beauty come spring. Since forming our club in May, we've learned a lot, seen a lot and attracted the attention of some other local Gardening Clubs. Valley Beautiful Garden Club, VBGC, (formerly Valley Beautiful) originated in 1964, and is a great 'garden-wise' resource promoting the use of California native, water-wise plants and water-wise landscaping. www.valleybeautiful.org They meet every second Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm at Valley Wide on Esplanade, and on Dec. 10 will have a succulent wreath making workshop. All are welcome to attend. Some other great resources that are specific to Mediterranean Climate Zones are www.calscape.org www.cal-nativeplants. com www.bewaterwise.com and www.cnps. org . Temecula Valley Rose Society embraced our club at an event early in September, including our members in all of their happenings. If your passion is roses, these folks are serious! Gracious and welcoming, they are eager to share their secrets for growing 'prize-winning' roses. They meet every third Thursday at 10 am in the Temecula Library Community Room on Pauba Road and their website is: www. temeculavalleyrosesociety.org. December's meeting will be a holiday excursion to Grand Traditions in Fallbrook on Fri., Dec. 6 touring their winter-themed gardens and lunch on the Beverly Mansion Veranda. www.grandtradition. com Carpooling, we will depart at 8:30 am from the small parking lot SW of the Lodge. All residents of Four Seasons are welcome ~ please RSVP by Dec. 4 to Sharon Deuber (760) 500-0077 or Sharon@ BlackDiamondInvestments.net. 18 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | December 2019 | "Late Bloomers" Garden Club A R T Group Art classes are in full swing.
