28 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JANUARY 2020 | Hello music fans and happy new year. We are looking forward to meeting many of you for the first time in this new year. We are still getting acquainted with folks who have been longtime residents of Sun Lakes and are just now joining us for our shows. We have also met some new residents as well. Put us on your calendar in the new year for Karaoke with Barb Miller, Rosie Ingalls & D.J. Blast. This month Karaoke will be at the South Clubhouse on Fri., Jan. 24 from 5:30 to 9 pm. Hope to see you then. Happy New Year and as usual we will keep a mic on for you. Karaoke Group Our writer tribute this month is to an author who only lived here a short time but he was in love with California. RLS (Robert Louis Stevenson) was born in Scotland in 1850. He had bronchial troubles which caused him to move around the world looking for a better climate. He came from a family who designed and built lighthouses. RLS felt he would rather write than build towers with a light on top. He died early at age 44 but in his short time he managed to write great novels and travel books along with essays. Among his classics are Treasure Island, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Kidnapped. During these long winter nights here in Sun Lakes you now have the time to catch up on the classics. You would be surprised at how good these books are. Check out this RLS quote: "California has been a land of promise in its time, like Palestine; but if the woods continue so swiftly to perish, it may become, like Palestine, a land of desolation." This quote is almost a prophecy. While in Monterey in 1880, RLS started a forest fire because he was fascinated by the many fires in the Californian forests and wondered whether it was the moss growing on the trees that first caught fire. The moss did catch fire – and quickly spread. He was caught but somehow escaped punishment. Whether you want to write your own classic or poetry or even a memoir join us in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room from 3 to 5 pm always on the first Monday (Jan. 6) and third Wednesday (Jan. 15). Our meetings are fun and often educational. The group can help you with your writing or you can simply see what others are creating. There are no dues nor crazy initiations.
