SLCC Golf & Pro Shop News By Alan Vallecorsa Water Channel Update Holes 14-16 Recap: By now I am sure you have seen the construction over the past 4 months as we have been working on the Championship course drainage. This is on holes #14- 16, the area where water runs from Highland Springs then continues on thru three holes and exits out south of the property. The water runs swiftly and in the past has caused golf delays and damage. The damage was addressed a while back with Loma Linda Hospital (the open lot across the street) and along with our lawyer we finalized a settlement and those dollars were put toward the project. The project was engineered by Webb out of Riverside and a project manager was called on to oversee the project. The channel was never engineered to have water totally go subsurface as some may have thought. The intent was to channel the water through the course, and retain any silt from the water coming in off of Highland Springs. It was also engineered so that as the storm water started to slow down a 12" drain pipe along holes #15 and #16 with a 36" pipe running across #14 would allow us to "catch up" which ultimately allows these holes to dry out much faster. We recently were tested by a Thanksgiving storm which brought a large amount of rain (over 2") and 3" of snow and we are pretty happy with how things turned out. There is still some tweaking to do, but all things considered, the course drained very well and quickly. In the past if we received that amount of water, it would have caused us to be unable to play golf for at least three to five days — certain parts of those holes would have been unplayable for weeks. All in all we are happy with the results. So the next time it rains hard, think of the improved channel on your golf course.
