Let it be resolved… Tails and Trails wishes everyone a wonderful 2020! Worthwhile affirmations for the new year are always in order. Pet parents, especially, are encouraged to consider adoption of the following: 1. I show respect for my neighbors and love of community, I NEVER fail to pick up after my dog – no matter where we are. This responsibility is mine alone; there is no one else who will be picking up after us. 2. I protect my pet from becoming permanently lost by ensuring that my dog or cat has a registered microchip – because it can save my pet's life! Tags and collars fall off. Microchips don't. 3. Annually, I double-check the registry information on my pet's microchip to make sure that my address and phone are current. It's the best protection I can give my pet in the event they get lost. 4. I update myself by reading and following all the community guidelines regarding pets – paying special attention to ALWAYS keeping my dog on a leash (for my dog's safety as much as for any other reason). Don't know where to find the rules? Visit the community website. Select HOA from the top menu, then Governing Documents > Community Guidelines > Part 1 – Guidelines. 5. I set up annual assessments for my healthy pet(s) so we can enjoy our lives together as long as possible. 6. I closely monitor my pet's dental health and weight, two factors crucial to longevity. 7. I consistently engage in plenty of play time and mental stimulation with my pet(s), especially when weather extremes keep us inside. 8. If I consider adopting a new pet, I look to local shelters and rescues first. Tails & Trails recommends Ramona Humane Society, Save a Small Dog Rescue, and Joy in My Heart Foundation. 9. I follow Tails & Trails to learn more about volunteering to foster a pet on a long- or short-term basis. Lost or broken animals deserve all the love, warmth and attention needed for a chance at a forever home. 10. I attend at least one Tails & Trails meeting each year to learn more ways to be a better pet parent. Tails & Trails next general meeting: Tues., Jan. 28 at 5 pm in RCN 3. Have you ever forgotten why you entered a room to get something important… but what was it? Forgetting is no joke in a senior community, but with each new year we easily forget our New Year's Resolutions in less than a week, experts tell us. But TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) members have many ways of remembering our healthy lifestyle resolutions. We have memorized pledges, like mantras, that let us audibly reinforce the necessity to strive for better eating and exercise habits. We have experts and their writings that we review. They tell us the latest findings in the field of healthy living. We do physical exercises that fit people with any physical limitations. We share recipe tips and sometimes foods that reflect healthy eating. And most of all, we have each other. This should not be thought of as a Kumbaya group, but there is a definite advantage to gathering with people who have the same set of life experiences. We support and encourage each other whenever we see each other. We have challenges and contests, such as the team challenge, currently causing come competitive excitement. Last month, Johanna Ballard and Marty Bauer were our big losers. They accepted their prizes in the midst of a loud ovation. Why not join us, and make a healthy difference in your life, today. We meet Tuesday, 8 am, in The Lodge Ballroom. Andi Henderson (918) 497-6491. ~ Andrea Henderson TOPS
