12 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2020 | Garden Club Happy New Year! All OHCC residents are welcome to attend the OHCC Garden Club general meetings held on the second Wednesday of each month in Abravanel Hall beginning at 9:30 am for refreshments and mingling. Stop at the Greeters' table for a name tag and to pick up a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of the beautiful plants that we give away each month. If you want to sign up for membership or for volunteering, stop at our Hospitality table. Also, check out the sharing table outside the double doors by the stage. You may find that perfect plant to fill a spot in your garden. The January meeting will be Wed., Jan. 8. January's speaker will be Greg Alder, who has been a Master Gardener for the past seven years with the University of California Cooperative Extension in San Diego County, where he extended the gardening journey he started about 15 years ago when he lived in a rural village in Lesotho, Africa, as a Peace Corps teacher. Of course, there it wasn't called gardening. Growing your food was just another part of daily life. But he found it challenging and fascinating, and his students at Ngoana Jesu Secondary School taught him to grow potatoes, green onions, moroho (chard, cabbage, collards, mustard), tomatoes, peppers, and, eventually some flowers. Prospective Master Gardeners are taken through about six months of classes, workshops, and field trips conducted by professors of soil science, farm advisors for avocados, landscape architects, nurserymen, professional grafters, irrigation specialists, citrus researchers, weed scientists, and more. Now that the rains may come to visit us, Greg, using his unique knowledge and perspective, will be discussing the collection and use of rain water and grey water in our landscape. Upcoming Events: Now that we are starting a new year, don't forget to join in the fun of Do Dues Day on Jan. 4, and bring your check for $10 for your membership in our wonderful OHCC Garden Club. We have terrific speakers lined up for the coming months and will be announcing tours and activities soon. Yiddish Club The famous New York City Katz's Deli came to Ocean Hills on Dec. 22. Members and guests of the Yiddish Club enjoyed New York style pastrami, corned beef and chopped liver at its luncheon. Actually, the meal was catered by Katella Deli, located in Orange County! After the meal, the Club members were entertained by comedian and raconteur, Shalom Sherman. We welcomed our new Board members, installed by longtime member and past officer, Birdie Blaine: Co-Presidents, Elaine Massei and Batia Cagan; Co-Vice Presidents, Debbie Garey and Itamar Cagan; Treasurer, Arnie Wallins; Secretary, Joann Bush; Retention Co-Chairs, Katherine Backman and Carole Silverman; Program Committee, Richard Tilker, Sandy Marin and Harv Jaffe; Refreshments, Laraine Steinman and Kaye Preston. Past President Lainy Vinikow and Past Vice President Don Kent. Their spirit, enthusiasm, and ideas promise a very special year for the Yiddish Club. Our next meeting, taking place Mon., Feb. 17, will be a most enjoyable event. More information will be forthcoming. A membership fee of only $10 will offer you a year of heartwarming, inspiring, and thought provoking programs! Speaking Yiddish is not a requirement. Come join us and have some fun! Looking forward to seeing you on Do Dues Day, Jan. 4. Best of health, Elaine Massei and Batia Cagan, Co-Presidents. Greg Alder, Master Gardener, will be January's Garden Club speaker
