36 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2020 | OK, so this 2 wood walks into a bar and the bartender says "we don't serve your kind here." The 2 wood is taken aback and says "what do you mean, you don't serve my kind here, why not?" And, the barkeep says "we just won't serve those that drink and drive." What? You have a better joke? OK, fine. Send it to me and I will publish it, if it is really funny. Thanks. The indomitable Tom and Marilyn Vetlesen put on another of their fun Guys and Dolls tournaments and 130 players hit the links. This tournament lacked nothing. How about the shortest drive, mulligans, magic putts, ladies teeing off from the men's tee and vice versa. Good grief! After the game, there was a full, FREE (thanks to donations), fun bar with beer, wine, soft drinks, water and funny volunteers as the barkeeps. In addition, Grady Machnick and Joan McAlister cooked up some truly long dogs with all the trimmings (except the Grey Poupon) and served up a choice of chips too. Just one negative comment here… more Fritos and fewer Cheetos was heard from the crowd. We all thank the super volunteers who helped make this a great success. Oh yes, in addition to the flight winners, Low Net was the team of Mike and Linda Bell with Tex and Karen Burke, and Low Gross was Jim Mulvey and Natalie Sentz with Mark and Teresa Deutman. Good on them… Your reporter attended the Golf Club Board meeting this month and it was truly interesting and informative. One thing that was of prime importance was the discussion about the closing of the course in the future for the purpose of re-engineering the watering system from our well and some changes to the layout including possibly another par four hole. The most important point is that the Board is looking about in our north county community as to where we could possibly continue playing at other par 3 and 4 courses while ours is closed. If anyone has contacts who might help, please inform me or one of the Board members. And, the Board took up an even more pressing matter. With winter coming on, the posting of flags at the entrance to the course, to tell golfers on the website or in person about delays, closed or open, taco truck, or ice on the course. It was determined that the fluorescent color of Mel Feintuch's normal golf shirt would be more than enough warning. Look for them on a flag pole. See picture (left). Bernie Alfonso got his hole in one on men's day at #7. Good for you Bernie. It wasn't Bernie's first, but he deserves a pic too (below). If you know of someone or if you are purchasing a single rider golf cart, make certain it meets all the standards as we have had to rule out a couple of new carts. Copies of the regulations are available at the Casa. Thanks to all the guys who phoned in for cancellations on Men's day. This really helps the Casa dudes speed along the tee offs, and helps with filling in those teams with fewer than four players. Please guys and dolls, do phone in your cancellations, thanks. A huge thank you to Jeannie Murell for her tireless work, including handing out the winning monies to the victors the morning after the last Touring Amateurs of the year hosted by Aegis Living at Shadowridge. And thanks also to Kathy Hunt for all the hours she has put in to make Touring Amateurs so successful this year. In addition to the normal flight winners there was one seriously great foursome that is rarely heard about: The D flight. Winners of D flight gross with an average handicap of 20 played a super game and shot a 65 on a par 61 course. Incredible! Congratulations to Fred McGarvey, Val Gwin, Jeannie, and Everette Murrell. Don't forget Do Dues Day to re-up or you can just take your check to the Clubhouse. That's all folks. Hal at bbopalua@yahoo.com Golf Club
