32 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2020 | Good News - Thanks to Securitas and a Pet ID tag One afternoon in mid-December, a dog was seen running loose near the dog park end of the overflow parking lot. No owner was in sight. One pet lover called Securitas to report this, while another grabbed one of her own leashes and approached the dog. The dog was clearly frightened but allowed herself to be leashed up. It took less than 10 minutes for Securitas to get there. Fortunately, the dog's collar had an ID tag with the owner's phone number. Unfortunately, there was no home address. The Securitas employee was able to call the guard gate and match the phone number with the owner's address. The Securitas employee was asked if he would be willing to take the dog to her owner. He had a big SUV, and without hesitation, said "Yes." The dog jumped easily into the back seat and they were off. Lessons learned: Have an ID tag on your pet's collar with your name, address and phone number. That means cats, too. Have them wear the collar even when you are at home. Most lost pets have escaped from their own home. Periodically check the tag to make sure the writing is still legible. When renewing your OHCC car registration, be sure to add your pet's name and breed, plus microchip and Humane Society License number if you have them. You might want to upload a picture of your pet, just in case they get lost. Finally — and this is a new suggestion, in case of emergency when you might suddenly be taken to the hospital, in addition to identifying a person who has keys to your house, give contact information for a person who can get into your house and take care of your pet. Pet Lovers Club Genealogy Interest Group The Genealogy Interest Group is a group of individuals who want to find out about their heritage. Who your ancestors were, where they lived and what they did. The group provides tools to do your search and help in getting started or suggestions to the experienced to breakthrough a stumbling block to another generation. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 10 am to noon with a short presentation and a help session answering questions the attendees have. We offer a second two hour period of individual help each month, date and time to be announced on the TAG calendar. We offer the World Explorer version of Ancestry. com, a search engine for finding your ancestors free of charge in the computer lab. (Individual subscription about $100 a month.) We offer the Family Tree Maker program on several of the computers in the lab to catalog your family tree data and present your tree data. The coordinators are Dorothy Miller and Don Wirth. Help sessions will add Peggy Singh. Contact us at ohccgen@gmail.com. Ask about our OHCC discount!
