| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2020 | 9 Deciding To Stay Active In Spite Of Your Age By Joe Formino, Chairman, District Delegate Assembly Overheard the other day, "Oh my gosh, I just turned 80 today I feel so old!" Or you may hear, "I never thought I would be in my eighties!" Sit back and think, how old do you feel? Look around you. What do you see? You see a world of new things, new inventions, things you never dreamed would exist in your lifetime. Have you stayed close to the new trends, the advancements in technology? We should develop the attitude that age is a number. It is more important to find out what you can still do rather than worry about the number of years you have been around in this life. One does not have to be a computer expert — but you should learn to use one for information and communication. It really helps you feel part of what's going on in the world today. Get a mobile phone. You don't need an iPhone with all of its hi- tech — a flip phone will do. A mobile phone keeps you in touch and is the best safety item you could carry with you. When you need help, the telephone is there to bail you out. We all know we cannot do what we did 20 years ago. The mind thinks you can but the body will not cooperate and follow orders. But, with a little effort on our part, we can exercise and try to be more active rather than give up and sit in front of the television all day. Get up, do some things, stay active should be the order of the day. In some of our clubs at Sun Lakes, there are dancers in their 80s and 90s. They are not as nimble as they were in the past, but they are sure proud of what they can do today. There are guys and gals on the golf courses swinging away as if they can hit a 300-yard drive. Their handicaps are not the same as 20 years ago, but who cares? A 150-yard drive is a thing of beauty. If you want to be edified, watch the Bocce Ball games. There are players using canes and walkers participating in the games. Obviously, there are disabilities that keep us from doing a lot of things. We should work at being mentally alert and active. It all depends on whether we want to make the effort. Is it better to awake each day and look forward to accomplishing a few tasks or participating in some activity or is it better to awake each day and feel sorry for yourself because you have nothing to look forward to? Your years on earth is a number. Don't let it govern your attitude or your mental well being. Your body may ache and creak but your mind can keep strutting down the road accomplishing your goals and you can have a lot of fun doing it. DISTRICT DELEGATE ASSEMBLY REPORT
