10 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2020 | Zone Captains are vital parts of every District's organization. They are "where the rubber meets the road," responsible for maintaining a reliable link between residents and their District representatives. Zone Captains were created as part of the original EPAP plan almost 30 years ago to verify the status of residents after a large scale emergency event. To this day, Zone Captains are clearly outlined in the EPAP manual that was approved by the Sun Lakes Master Board. Zone Captains use a Zone Status Report to maintain an ongoing record of relevant information. This includes the names, addresses, number of occupants, their relevant health needs, and pets within homes in each zone in the community. Zone Captains periodically visit or call residents in their zones to update this information and forward changes to their EPAP Coordinators. Following an annual drill or actual disastrous event, they survey each residence in their zone and report the results to their EPAP Coordinator at their District Command Post. In many Districts, Zone Captains are the ones who deliver monthly newsletters to residents. However, the importance of these individuals cannot be minimized or limited to merely "mail carriers." Zone Captains connect every resident to the whole of Sun Lakes, in terms of communication and safety. They are essentially the ones who define the very idea of "community." Zone Captains Role In Connecting SLCC LEADERSHIP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED EPAP's Emergency Preparedness Organization encourages all Sun Lakers to be prepared and ready to protect themselves in an emergency. It consists of volunteer residents that make up the Executive Team, Management Units, and District personnel. EPAP depends on the participation of Sun Lakes residents to help carry out its Emergency Preparedness Plan. EPAP's Executive Team consists of three individuals who provide support, budget management, and training for the entire EPAP organization. Leadership volunteers for this important team are needed. If you have a background in management and/or leadership, and a desire to volunteer your time and expertise to our community, EPAP may be just the thing for you. You can call the EPAP number at (951) 524-3126 for more information.
