| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2020 | 3 From the President's Desk By Sandra Moyer This year it is going to be very important that our residents take an active interest in our Master Board Elections. There will be three new people elected as leaders of our community for the next two years. All of us need to be as informed as possible about all of the candidates in order to make good voting decisions. What has been the extent of their involvement in our community? What clubs do they belong to, how active are they in their District, have they served on any community committees, do they attend Master Board and Delegate meetings? Just how informed are they with the workings and administration of Sun Lakes? Finally, do they have a specific agenda, and if so, what is it? How do you find these answers? One way is by attending their coffees and open forums, if they have any, and asking questions. Another way is by attending one or both of the Candidate Forums. The first will be on March 3 at 6 pm and the second on March 4. at 10 am. Both will be held in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Last month we held two informational meetings for potential Master Board candidates. The purpose of these meetings was to give individuals interested in running for the Board an overview of the responsibilities and commitment necessary to be a good member. We also discussed the qualifications needed to run. They are: 1. Be an owner occupant 2. Lived here for a year 3. No felony convictions in the financial realm 4. Committed to the future success of Sun Lakes 5. Do not need to be an expert at accounting, or anything else, but should be willing to do their own research and not be afraid to ask questions 6. Have good common sense 7. Constantly aware of the community as a whole, and how their decisions will affect all residents 8. Willing to listen to other people's points of view, and open to suggestions 9. Be a team player, knowing that nothing can be approved without three votes. If you meet these qualifications you can run to be a member of the Master Board. Go to the Administration Building on Feb. 3 and request the candidate forms, fill them out, and return them by 5 pm on Feb. 21. Updates on past & upcoming events: Refresh- All painting is completed, including the South Wing. Instead of carpeting in this area, we are going to install laminate flooring similar to the product put into the Sandwedge. Time frame should be starting around Jan. 27 and completed in two weeks. We are still hopeful that the new furniture will be delivered by the first of March. The plantings on holes 14,15 & 16 are still scheduled to start the first of March, weather permitting. As most of you know, Sun Lakes was sued in Small Claims Court by a resident (Aranda vs Sun Lakes) over a trip to Catalina. Unfortunately, we lost and was told by the judge that our disclaimer was not valid. Therefore, the Board had to put a hold on all trips until we met and discussed with legal our options. It is a shame that after 30 years of offering great trips at affordable cost to our residents (and yes hiccups can appear when dealing with groups and traveling and sometimes events happen beyond our control), that we have to change our procedures which will probably increase the cost to attend these excursions. At this time, all trips and excursions have been suspended with the exception of the Santa Barbara and Sedona/Prescott trip along with Meridian and Premier Travel Tours. The Board and Management is currently working with third party vendors to continue to provide future trips for Sun Lakes residents. We apologize for the inconvenience and will keep you up to date as to when future trips and excursions will start again. Food for Thought: Live every day as if it is your LAST chance to make someone laugh. "Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many." "Keep life moving forward. Looking backward is only for time travelers." By Rachel O. Washington
