| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2020 | 37 Racquet Club In December, OHCC Racquet Club's Patty Coffey invited Rancho Carlsbad tennis players to a World Team Tennis round robin, which included men's, women's and mixed doubles. This is the second time a reciprocal arrangement was made with the nearby club, but the first time the players faced off here at OHCC. Home court proved advantageous and our OHCC team earned the most points. It's now Rancho Carlsbad's turn to host in the roaring 20s. What's new in 2020? With more players on deck, Paddle Tennis has earned a year-round morning drop-in slot at the HOA courts. With a consistent drop-in schedule on Mondays from 9 to 10:30 am, the momentum will keep building. No worries if you don't have a paddle, as equipment is available to try out. Speaking of paddles, those that stopped by the club's Do Dues table on Jan. 4, were asking about the bright, shiny - albeit gaudy - paddles on display, alongside old school styles. What's driving the racquet resurgence? High tech graphite composite surfaces provide high performance for high speed impact hit and response, while the foam core's hole distribution provides a better control. "The latest designs are easier on the arm," says Sally Palmer, sports committee advisor to the Racquet Club Board. "It feels like you're doing less, but the ball comes off the paddle faster." One of the things the OHCC Racquet Club does well is provide free instruction, whether it's introductory classes for newbies or refresher lessons for those who have not picked up a paddle in a while. All the Racquet Club's net sports welcome OHCC residents to participate in the free classes; membership in the club is not required. Check out these free lessons: • Paddle Tennis: Part of Monday morning drop-ins 9 to 10:30 am, HOA courts • Pickleball: Mike Hoggatt's Introduction to Pickleball for new players Saturday mornings Jan. 18 through March 7, 9:15 to 11 am, Tennis Court 1 • Tennis: Refresher lessons Wednesday afternoons April 15 through May 20 at Tennis 3. New players can get started at drop-ins M/W/F, 8 to 9 am • Badminton: Wednesday evenings late spring and summer TBA; • Water Volleyball: M/W/F, 2 to 4 pm. We will have our summer Bocce barbecues on May 17, June 14, July 19, Aug. 16, and Sept. 20. All start at 3 pm. Bring your own main entree to BBQ and something to share. Three Bocce Buddies events are set on the following Mondays at 10 am on Bocce Court One. April 20, July 20, and Oct. 19. This is a great opportunity for any new or semi new players to learn rules and procedures of Bocce. Also, any vets that want to tune up their abilities can attend. If you will be attending any Bocce Buddies class, please RSVP to Mike Chunka at (760) 842-7147 OR mike38101@ msn.com. He needs to know how many people will be there. Please practice good sportsmanship any time all the courts are full and people are waiting. The losing teams of the first games should leave the courts to allow those waiting to play the second games.
