56 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2020 Tennis Club Here we are in the midst of election season, with Super Tuesday coming up and the less contentious, but still important Tennis Club Committee elections right behind us. There were five candidates running for the five seats on the Committee, so with the help of a bargain-priced app we got on sale in Des Moines, we were able to determine the winners on the same night the votes were cast. Elected to their two-years terms were incumbents Bernadette Martin and Chuck Beckman, along with newcomers Rebecca Flowers, Stan Lam, and Lizzie Gallegos. All of them stepped up to be of service to the Club members by planning and conducting various activities, such as monthly Play Days, special tournaments and competitions, training and practice opportunities, and social events. Leaving the Committee was Bernadette Chance, who brought her creativity and impeccable organizational skills to the Committee when she graciously agreed to fill the position of the late Irve Sturner. Also, stepping away from the Committee after six years of participation and writing for The Breeze was yours truly, Steve Hovey. Of particular note, however is that Howard Lyon also chose to give up his seat on the Committee. Howard was one of the charter members of the Club and Committee, having served since 2007, making him an OG (that's Old Geezer not Original Gangster). Howard has maintained all of the records and minutes for the Club in a well-organized binder and he has been our "go-to" guy to fix and maintain our various ball machines. Within the records he has kept is the list of the original Committee members in addition to himself: Loren Duchesne, Padoo Peralta, Cheryl Smith, and Richard Bird. In addition to the elections at the Annual Meeting, the members had a celebratory dinner and review of the very active 2019 year that included the Red/Blue Team Tournament, Autumn Aces competition, and the Mixed Doubles Tournament. Our USTA Mixed Doubles team and Men's Doubles team are having mixed results, winning some and losing some, which is better than some of the other teams can say. These leagues are for players age 55 and above, so team names can range from AARP Arthritics to Medicare DisAdvantaged. But they're all out on the courts playing some nice tennis, meeting other tennis enthusiasts, and getting exercise. Join us.
