66 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2020 | JOYCE J. FREEMAN was born on February 25, 1936, and passed away on December 3, 2019, with her husband Roland of 66 years by her side. Joyce was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Walter and Gladys Kier, the second of two children. The family moved to the Oregon coast in 1944. As a small girl, Joyce loved to read. She thought that the local library was the most wonderful place in the world to spend time and stated proudly that she had read every book that they had. As a teenager, she moved to Eugene, Oregon, and enrolled in University High School, where she met Roland Freeman. Joyce and Roland married in the fall of 1953 and moved to Tacoma, Washington, where Roland was serving in the Army at Ft. Lewis. After the Army, they relocated to Los Angeles for a short period before returning home to Eugene, Oregon, to start a family. Moving to Lake Oswego, Oregon, with four boys in 1966, Joyce went to work at the local community college, not long after. She truly enjoyed working and maintained close ties with many of her coworkers after her retirement. During the late eighties and early nineties, Joyce and Roland traveled to Hawaii each spring. Spending time in the sunshine getting away from the wet and cold winters of the pacific northwest was something that Joyce looked forward to each year. Joyce loved her walks along the beach with Roland, stopping in the local resort hotels for a meal or an iced tea. Joyce had a real green thumb and loved to garden. She and Roland built a large garden in the back of their Lake Oswego home. Her grandkids always loved being outback with her, picking produce, or just being with grandma. In 1998 Joyce and Roland relocated to Sun Lakes. She and Roland joined the square dance club and purchased an RV. Joyce loved traveling by RV with friends from the Sun Lakes community on long cross country trips. Their trips often took them to one of the national parks, historical sites, and museums. Joyce was loved and admired by her family and will be missed but not forgotten. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Roland G. Freeman; her son Brent and wife Mary; son Scott and wife Traci; son Steve and wife Sue; son Matt and wife Gwen; grandchildren Jennifer (husband Austin), Robert, Jake (wife Sara), Kristina, Cody, Tyler, Lindsey (husband Lorenzo), Ryann (wife Stephanie), Jackson and Rafe, and great-grandchildren Dominic, Bruno, Ava, Connor, Luck, Reily, Juliette, Clay Addie, Jordan and Jason. DENNIS HAUGHN Dennis was born in Rural Artesia, CA, on May 6, 1951. The Gene Haughn family moved to Fullerton, CA, in 1953. Dennis loved playing all sports, from an early age, but excelled at Fullerton High School, especially in football and baseball. Dennis played football at Fullerton Jr. College, and received a football scholarship to San Diego State in 1972. Dennis was a P.E. major-Recreation minor. In 1973, Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Jane (Janie) Linder. After graduating, Dennis worked as the Recreation Advisor for The Boys Club of America in Solana Beach and Palm Springs. After a few years, and the addition of his three, wonderful children, Dennis worked as a salesman, then decided to relocate to Redlands and go back to college and get his teaching credential. In the early 90s, as a teacher, he joined the Redlands Terrier Varsity Football Coaching Staff, which he was involved with until his retirement in 2015. At Redlands High School, Coach Haughn taught Co-Ed PE and Girls' Softball, which he thoroughly enjoyed. In the last few years, Dennis and his wife of 46 years, resided in Sun Lakes where Dennis enjoyed playing golf and billiards, as well as the different events that were available. Dennis battled bone marrow cancer for eight years, and the complications associated with chemotherapy. He fought a good fight and passed away peacefully on January 23, 2020. Dennis was admired and respected by many, but especially loved by his wife, Janie, their three children, Kevin Haughn, Keith Haughn, daughter Kelley Dobard and their wonderful spouses and precious grandchildren. Dennis was straight-forward, spoke his thoughts, and was passionate about his family, his faith, his country, and sports. He will be greatly missed. HELEN FRANCES MATTIAS 82, was born near Chicago on July 29, 1937 and went to the Lord December 26, 2019. She graduated from the University of Illinois. She taught school in Fullerton, CA, where she met and married her husband. After her husband died, she moved to Sun Lakes with her two dogs. She loved animals of all kinds, but expecially dogs. She was an avid bird watcher and traveled as far as the Gulf of Mexico to watch them. Helen worked closely with animal shelters all over the Inland Empire and collected donations for them. She put many miles on her car doing just that. Helen also worked closely with her church, as a member of the Ladies Guild and helping with rummage sales and bake sales. She was very unselfish and helped people whenever she could. Many people were taken to doctor appointments and shopping by Helen. Helen was a very hard worker in the EPAP Animal Program. She "fostered" many dogs and an occasional cat. We will all miss her very much. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made in her name to an animal shelter or Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Rd., Kanab, Utah, 84741 (435-644-2001). Friends we will miss
