| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2020 | 7 Golf Course Irrigation & Renovation By Don Lopez By the time you read this article, you will, hopefully, have attended the Town Hall introducing the plans for our golf course renovation project. I will summarize the meeting in next month's newsletter, but here, for those who didn't attend, is a recap of some of the key points we plan to cover. We will discuss the path that has taken us to this point where we can convert the large volume of water we have in our well to irrigate the golf course and the fingers surrounding the golf course. During our bidding of this project last year, all five golf course architects told us our bunkers, tees, and greens all needed renovation. We were also working on reclaimed water for the golf course. David Key and Ellen Baur were meeting with the city of Oceanside in 2010 to obtain reclaimed water for the golf course. This project has been in the works for over 10 years. We have been reserving money for it for several years as well. Now that we have secured the water source as our well, we can proceed to realize the savings available from our own water. We will also have protection from future water restrictions. We can still irrigate with our well. All of our reserve items have a useful life on which the replacement reserve is based. We are way over the useful life on all components of the golf course. We will show the useful life chart for all golf course components published by the ASGCA at the Town Hall meeting. Our golf course is heavily used. The annual number of rounds of golf played are as follows: 11,000 rounds of tournament golf and 9,000 rounds of individual golf for a total of 20,000 rounds per year on our course. Jon Cancel, our golf course superintendent, will explain the condition of our greens and bunkers. Our objectives that we asked all the bidders to respond to are: convert our irrigation to the well water; more efficient maintenance to reduce costs; increase playability for golfers of all skill levels; and improve safety on our course. It is likely that the golf course will only be closed for a relatively short time. A possible schedule could be: for three months we will play the front nine while the back nine is done; the course will be closed for three months while the grass grows back on the back nine and the front nine is done; we will then play the back nine while the grass grows back on the front nine. Therefore, in nine months we could be back to an 18-hole course. I think you will agree that would be a good schedule. Please remember, all construction schedules are subject to change. At the Feb. 28 meeting we will look at the finances for this project. We will explain that the well conversion is the Capital Improvement portion of this project, whereas the new irrigation system and overall course renovation is a reserve item. We will have another Town Hall meeting with the golf course Designer before the Capital
