All performers are your Solera friends and neighbors. You've been waiting… Now they're here! SOLERA PERFORMING ARTS SOCIETY By Pam Grider, Resident Tap dance was thought to have developed in the late 1600s. Slaves brought from Africa, deprived of their musical instruments, started using their feet to tap out rhythms. By the 1800s some Irish and Scottish folk dance was incorporated to become a unique American style of dance. Tap dance increases strength, flexibility, posture, coordination and balance. It is excellent for cardio benefit as well as mentally challenging. One hour of tap burns between 200 to 600 calories, depending on one's level. Most people know people who have made tap famous including Bill (Bojangles) Robinson, Shirley Temple, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly, Sammy Davis Jr., Gregory Hines and today's top performer Savion Glover. The great thing about tap is anyone can learn it, at any age or size. Nothing matters but your own wish to learn. It is socializing in a fun, safe setting, learning new skills every week. I started Solera Tap three years ago after numerous people asked about it. We began at level one, the very basics. The whole class has progressed amazingly well. We are now on level four, high intermediate. The women in the group have performed for our community many times, they are hardworking and dedicated. The Witch Dance on Halloween is just one example of the fun and commitment we have. We will continue with several performances this year, including soft shoe and Hawaiian hula. If you would like to join us, come observe to see if it's something you'd like. If there is enough interest, a second beginning class could be started. Tap Dancing
