The Friendship Club Yiddish Culture Club At the time of writing this article, most of the country is still under quarantine orders. At the time you read this, we pray that the sacrifices made by so many will show good results. On Wed., May 16 at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom, the Yiddish Culture Club is planning to host Remy IIona, a scholar, lawyer and author, currently at UC Riverside. The event is open to all (members are free, non-members are $5 pp). Refreshments will be served, and the seats in the Ballroom will be spaced out to adhere to social distancing requirements. Remy C. Ilona is a widely acknowledged spokesperson of Hebrew Igbos and one of their most important scholars. The Igbo population, at some 30 million people, is one of Nigeria's largest ethnic groups, and they are descended from the ancient Israelites. After a bloody civil war in the 1960s that left more than 1 million Igbos dead, their identification with the Jews, who faced their own genocide, took on a new depth. Not only do these Nigerians identify with the Jews, they have begun practicing Judaism. Ilona has emerged as their spokesperson. Based on the oral folklore he collected, Ilona published his first book in 2004 and over the next decade wrote half a dozen more. Together they make something of an "Igbo Mishna." Come listen and learn about this fascinating historical topic. Watch for updates about events on the Sun Lakes website and Good Day Sun Lakes. The Yiddish Culture Club welcomes all homeowners of any denomination Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time.
