54 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2020 |
Plague and pestilence have been ingrained in the world's literature
from the Bible's accounts of ancient Israel; Socrates and the plague
of Athens; Marcus Aurelius' Rome (also emanating from China).
Boccaccio gave us his Decameron out of the Black Death in Italy;
Albert Camus concocted his existential parable from cholera in
Algeria. Even Gabriel Garcia Marquez used that motif in his post-
modern novel Love in the Time of Cholera. So, your scribe must
apologize in advance for not producing better prose as this edition
goes to press.
Fortunately, at this writing, the COVID-19 scourge has not taken
the toll that many have feared. But it has laid waste to Sun Lakes'
recreation and social opportunities. And by the time this issue of
Lifestyles is published the landscape locally and nationally may have
changed dramatically. We picklers join all in our blessed community
in praying for the best possible May and June.
Our club has suspended all official play at the administration's
request. Just as the restrictions were kicking in, the Master Board
had graciously responded to our club's long-standing plea for more
court facilities. With the Tennis Club's generous assent, the Board
arranged in March for one of the two north side tennis courts to be
striped, creating four pickleball courts and nets were being procured.
Now, after years of sharing only three courts, Pickle and POP
Tennis will have separate facilities, with POP remaining on the courts
by the Ballroom. We appreciate the cooperation of all involved! Now,
if we can just lick this virus, all active Sun Lakers will be back in
action at full speed.
For those who are pining for the comforting sound of paddle-
meeting-ball, tune in to www.pickleballchannel.com for videos
highlighting the best in the game. See you (soon) on the courts!
