Bunco Join us for Bunco! We have a lot of fun and it is a perfect way to meet some new friends. This month Bunco will be on May 10 and 24. So grab a friend and join us in the Card Room at 1 pm sharp. Don't forget to grab a drink at Smitty's or maybe even lunch before. ~ Cheryl Burke & Suzanne Roldan Canasta #1 Join us for an afternoon of friendship and fun while playing a game of Hand and Foot Canasta. We meet in the Card Room every Thursday afternoon, 1:15 to 4 pm. Each week you may play with someone different, giving you an opportunity to meet other Four Season residents and old friends who enjoy an afternoon of "cool" cards. Plus, the Bistro is just down the hall if you would like a snack or a cold drink. We supply the cards so all you have to bring is your body and the desire to have a little fun. If you don't know how to play we are always happy to set up a teaching table and by the time the afternoon is over you have mastered the game. All you have to do is show up and leave the rest to us. ~ Melody Seewoster Bridge Join us on Monday afternoons, 12 to 4 pm, for an exciting game of bridge in the Lodge Card Room. It will give the brain some exercise and we can all use that at our age. We play a party type of bridge where we rotate partners. This enables you to meet and play with different people. All of us play at different levels and are learning how to play the game better. We are looking for more players and have started a beginners and refresher class. The class is 11 am to 12 pm. We currently have four to six players that have come to learn the game and they are playing together. If interested or have questions please call Helen at (951) 845-9312. Both Helen and I will be glad to help you learn the basics of the game and hope that you will join us to either learn how to play, watch or play the game of bridge. ~ Bill Guy Taste d'Vine May brings us many reasons to honor, celebrate and remember, and glasses to raise and toast. The month of May is full of holidays honoring mothers, teachers, nurses, and of course Memorial Day and the military. We also can't forget Cinco De Mayo and the fiestas. Spring is in full bloom and with the change in season, we are moving from the heavy dishes to lighter fare, from heavier wines to the medium and lighter ones that are bright and juicy, fresh, clean and crisp. Some of these wines are Riesling, Viognier, Saugivonon Blanc, Chablis, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Rioja, and Chianti just to start. To quote Kermit Lynch, American author and wine importer, "What sort of wine is perfect for spring? One with freshness, liveliness, and the fleeting perfumes of fruits and flowers. But, above all, the wine must possess that invigorating spirit nature designed us to experience as we emerge from the darkness of winter into the brilliant light of springtime." Join us Thursday, May 16, at 6 pm in the Lodge Ballroom as we raise our glasses and toast to all. Members $5, guests $8. Remember to bring an appetizer that serves at least eight, two glasses and your laughter too. ~ Anita Worthen Writer's Club Interest Group Interested in Writing? Come and join us! A Writers' Club can be of interest, not only to our residents who have published some of their writings but also to those who have written and never shown their writings, except perhaps to family and friends. The scope of such a club is as wide as the inspiration will stretch. It includes books of any kinds, short stories, plays, lyrics, poems, articles, bulletins and leaflets for sharing, discussing especially "how to" and promoting. Writing is putting down on paper what is in your mind. No matter the reasons for which it is done, it exercises the mind, sometimes in a therapeutic way: it is a mental sport practiced for an artistic outcome. It liberates, energizes and creates with assembled words to show for it and enjoy. Now, if you like the idea of a Writer's Club, please go to the desk at the Lodge and sign up as a supporter. We will keep you informed about the developments. Thank you. Info., Joseph, josephlaurin@verizon. net, (951) 769-1520. ~ Joseph Laurin Book Club Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell is a book of interrelated stories starting in the 1850s and ending in the distant future of 2346. In the first part of the book, six stories are started, then interrupted, at critical points in time. In the second half, the author returns to each of the stories and concludes them to complete the puzzle of the entire narrative. Through the ages, some characters share a birthmark designed as a comet with various interpretations of what it depicts. Common themes also come into play. Whatever interpretation the reader finds to be relevant, there seems to be a scientific, yet mystical connection with all the tales. Cloud Atlas is the third novel by this English writer who has made the list of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world. It is a challenging read, but well worth the effort. Join the book club at the Lodge for its discussion on May 14, at 9:30 am. The next assigned novel is Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese with book club chairman Doreen Sanders leading the discussion on June 11. We hope you join us for both meetings. ~ Connie Johnson Toastmasters Interest Group The Wind Talkers: We meet Wednesdays at 6:30 pm in the Conference Room. We have agreed that we will have "munchies" at our meetings and are opening every meeting to potential new members and those who are just curious, to join us for an evening, or (hopefully) more than one! We would love you to experience what we're about and why thousands of people throughout the world sing the praises of Toastmasters. Who would benefit from our Toastmasters group? • Anyone who isn't confident speaking up for themselves or asking questions to a person of power/authority, a medical professional, someone in a store, bank, restaurant — even a spouse/mate, friends and/or bosses, etc. • Someone who uncomfortable talking in front of groups. • Those who think of the "perfect" response too late. • Individuals want to improve their English. • People who enjoy public and impromptu speaking. • Those who want to eliminate the ums, ahs and well, you knows… There are three types of speaking: 1. General, regular conversational speaking; 2. Prepared speech of 5-7 minutes; & 3. Impromptu speaking on a specific topic for 1-2 minutes (we refer to this as Table Topics). On each, there is an evaluation, given by a peer in the group. It is not done in a critical way, at all. All of the positive points are mentioned first and then in a positive, constructive way pointers are given on how you can improve. You should never be leaving a meeting downhearted. Our meetings are very uplifting and informative. Info., Teri, (951) 992-9156. ~ Teri Meyers-Kelman Pacific Heating & Air Conditioning FOUR SEASONS Special!
