Garden Club There was gold. There was silver. Over loaded galleons could barely stay afloat as they left the new world. But the ones departing Mexico in the 16th century still had room for some small seeds. These plants were unfamiliar to the Old World but soon were growing in the palace gardens of Madrid. They were given the Greek word for beauty, "kosmos." Their lacy beauty enchanted the wife of the English ambassador to Spain, the Marchioness of Bute, and she brought some seeds back to her homeland in 1789. A half century later they started beautifying American gardens directly from Mexico. Cosmos are a member of the aster family. They are an annual plant grown from seeds planted after the danger of frost has passed. They like full sun and have been known to grow to five feet. Cosmos don't need to be fertilized Bereavement Group Have you lost a loved on? Are you feeling sad, overwhelmed, confused? Mother Nature does have a bit of a cruel streak with Cosmos. There is a variety, Cosmos atrosanguineus, the chocolate Cosmos that looks and smells like real chocolate but cannot be eaten. This beauty is a favorite for weddings and often found in bridal bouquets. Due to schedule conflicts and waning enthusiasm the Garden Club is now dormant.
