FOUR SEASONS SPOTLIGHT Amphitheater Keeps Improving By Cindy Graves, Activities Director If you haven't been to the Amphitheater yet, it needs to be your next destination"event. The Amphitheater is a cute outdoor venue located between the Paddleball and the Tennis courts. You'll know it by its open air design, flanked by lovely twisty-trees. It has become one of our favorite moonlight entertainment venues. Here is a little background on this open-air theater that you might be interested in: The Amphitheater Production Group, lead by Penny McDonell, was begun in 2009 to make use of a small lot that had not been used. There was no budget allotted for entertainment, so Penny, Carol Napolski, Phyllis Beede and I began wracking our brains on how we could bring free entertainment in. We all knew friends or relatives who were musicians, and we set to work coercing them to play for free to get exposure or "rugtime"(in my case, I pulled the "Mom-card" to get my son and his accommodating sister to come and play). At first there were only around 50 – 60 residents who joined us for the concerts, but year after year, more neighbors became aware of the opportunity, and showed up to hear our offering; folding chair in one hand, "favorite beverage" in the other. It's a new season for the Amphitheater in many ways now. The Amphitheater is at full capacity, seating 200 people, sharing both lawn and ledge seating. We now have six people arranging entertainemnt on the Steering Committee (Penny McDonell, John Noonan, Doris Sanfilippo, Peggy Dashel, Paula Wein, and Patty Jordan) as well as wonderful helpers who hand out programs, usher, set up and tear down. The Event Systems Committee (ESC) has been instrumental in helping us execute all of the sound mixing and monitoring before and during the events. Roland Harrah in particular, coordinates all of the technical micing and amping of instruments before the scheduled performances. He then recruits the rest of ESC to move speakers, cables and booms to match the event's requirements. There is a lot more to the concert series than might initially meet the 6 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2013 | community News eye, but hopefully on the night of the show, things look simple and seamless. Thanks to our extremely supportive Board of Directors, the Amphitheater Production Group was encouraged to present a proposal to pay for an entire concert series of all professional entertainment! It has since been approved and we have an amazing variety of professional musical artists for the 2013 season! A big thank you goes to everyone who contributed over the years to help pay for our volunteer musician's gasoline expenses. Be sure to pick up an Amphitheater Concert Series brochure in the Lodge for a full run down on the entertainers, dates and times. The first show is May 19, at 7 pm and showcases the fabulous talent of Tony Suraci. Husbands… keep your wives on a leash that night, because not only is this guy incredibly talented, but he's the "Sees chocolates" version of eye candy. This popular artist, has one of the most impressive vocal instruments around, performing highlights from the "Highway Men" — Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylan Jennings (you'll swear the celebrities listed above are here and singing). He will also feature selections from Classic Rock to 80s pop. Be sure to find yourself there that night and you'll be grateful you did! Neighborly Notes The Board of Directors General Session will be held on Thursday, May 9, at 1 pm in the Ballroom. Plan to attend to get updates on committee activity and general HOA business.
