| OHCC LIVING | MAY 2020 | 17 The BOD of our Club says to all 500+ members and to the community at large "We hope everyone is well!" The COVID-19 virus pandemic has had, and still is having, a huge impact on our lives in so many ways. We appreciate our HOA being so proactive in exercising cautions for our protection against getting the COVID-19 virus. The Club's problems are small in comparison to the woes of the world. We had to cancel our March, April, May, and June parties. At this time we are all awaiting news from official guidelines as to whether we can, or should, gather in July. Going forward we will try to assess each of the remaining party events on our 2020 schedule. In most cases we will need six to eight weeks prior to the event to make a determination. In addition to the health issue we need to take into account hiring the music, caterers (if it is a food event) and availability of Abravanel Hall. At this time there are no other venues in the near term. The Lanai has been completely removed and there is no schedule for the future facility. This leaves many clubs and groups scrambling for space. I understand the Master Board is exploring every alternative to ease this situation. Meanwhile, don't wait for a party to keep Rockin' and Rollin.' Dust off those CDs, log onto Pandora.com, or check out Cox channel 930 "Solid Gold Oldies" on your TV… yes, our Cox Cable has music! Rest assured that we are thinking hard about how our club can share the love of music while we take precautions. OceanHillsCountryClub.com Running out of entertainment? SO MUCH to choose from on our ON DEMAND PAGE: Theatre Arts plays, Impersonator shows, Blue Breeze Band, informative health seminars information from our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Master Board Meetings, Concert on the Green, Water Volleyball, oh so many interesting things. So, plug in, sign in, and enjoy this feature while you are at home. Stay safe! Doo Wop and Disco Board: Marv Harwood – President Linda Ball – Vice President Jim Kaminsky – Treasurer Lynn Murphy - Secretary Sue Silva – Director of Club Events Doo Wop Village Squares We are all missing the friendly faces of our fellow square dancers — the smiles, the dancing, the conversations, and the Yellow Rocks. So this month I will go back and recall some of the history of our club. The club was founded by Murray and Ida Rose in 1984 and was sanctioned in 1987. It started with just a few and gradually expanded to an organization of about 100. The original club color was purple, but some years later was changed to raspberry. Dottie Nelson designed and made the first banners with the silhouettes of square dancers. Some of these are still in use. In the beginning, there were a couple of different callers, and few people. Jim Randall was asked to come in and take over in 1992 as teacher and caller for two years. In 2002 and 2003 Wil Eades took over as teacher on Tuesdays when Jim worked for a while during the day. Dances were held from 7 to 9 pm. Somewhere around 2005 Jim instituted workshop from 6:30 to 7 pm before the dance, and most of the dancers came to that also. As the club and some of the dancers grew older, it was decided to change the time to 6:30 to 8:30 pm. In the early days rotating couples put on quite a spread of food, until dancers noticed the spreads were causing some unwanted spreading and changed to just simpler treats. Most presidents stayed in office one year, but Celia and Trevor Overett were presidents from 2002 to 2004. Celia also started scrapbooks for the club, and later presidents added to them. Marcia and Steve Ward also served longer, from 2013 to 2016, and re- energized the club with their sense of fun and enthusiasm. Two others were president multiple times, but with a different partner each time, each serving with her husband the first time, and then others. Valerie Thompson served with Gene, Lyle Bergeson, and Charline Kenney. Charline Kenney was president with Sig Gronich, Ellen Kippel, Valerie, and Pete Cannon. We can't recall history without mentioning Verle Robb, a past president who came to be known as Mr. Square Dance, with his enthusiasm, expertise, and joy of dancing, which inspired us all. He was a very generous person, mixing batches of margaritas for our parties and starting Thursday morning practice sessions for new dancers, now run by Steve Ward and Tim Griffin. Besides the presidents mentioned, other current members who served were Betty Heyer, Len and Clarice Holness, Jerry and Carolyn Hollander, Pete and Martha Cannon, Gene and Ruthie Alexander, and June Cooper. Many other members have served the club in other capacities, and all who have helped contribute to the club are greatly appreciated. Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time.
