20 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2020 | Birdwatchers Our May trip to Batiquitos west had to be canceled so I was asked to describe what we would have seen. This part of Batiquitos lagoon is a hidden gem, although a bit difficult to find after making a few turns within a housing development, but worth the trip. The flat trail above the lagoon lets you look down to a view of the ocean on one side and a view along the lagoon on the other. The houses along the route have a multitude of ornamentals in bloom and these, along with the blooming wildflowers on the hillsides, make this area very attractive to birds. Many birds are singing whether looking for mates or claiming territory while showing off their best feathering. There is a multitude of song sparrows, house sparrows, mockingbirds, and hummingbirds to view close up and study their songs. This is also the time of year for the migration of hooded orioles where several can be seen flying about especially into the palm trees which are their favorite nesting sites. At low tide a sand bar reveals itself allowing gulls, terns, and double-crested cormorants to sun themselves. Along the lagoon edges are egrets, great blue herons, willets, wigeons, and marbled godwits. An osprey and a belted kingfisher can be seen flying or resting on a wire crossing the lagoon while a peregrine falcon rests near the top of a power pole. We will try to visit this area at another time. TAG members are here to offer computer, tablet, and smart-phone assistance to all OHCC residents.
