14 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2020 | In 2020, we have not had much activity in the Wine Tasting Club, due to the pandemic emergency, particularly in view of the order to shelter at home. As of this writing (April 2020), it looks like the stay at home order may continue for quite some time, and even if it's relaxed this summer, the virus may rebound in the fall. But news reports indicate that consumption is up, so something must be going on. Where can you get wine during a lockdown? Options depend on how willing you are to venture outside the gates of Ocean Hills Country Club. All or nearly all of the places you would buy food (Albertson's, Stater Brothers, etc.) also sell wine. It may not be the kind you like, and it may not be at a price you want to pay, but it's convenient and it allows you to combine trips so as to limit your exposure to people who, after all, are the ones who can carry the virus. If you venture a little further, Costco has the best prices for wine, if they have what you like. Costco has gone all-out to make its stores as safe as possible. If you are a Trader Joe's fan, they have a pretty good variety of wines and their prices are usually pretty good as well. And they emphasize safety as well. A popular wine shop among club members is North County Wine Company, on San Marcos Boulevard. They can't have their happy hour any more due to the pandemic restrictions, but they provide a less crowded, more leisurely place to pick out some wines. If you really don't want to venture out, you can still get wine shipped direct from wineries either nearby or further north in the state. Each winery has a 'wine club' that you can join to receive monthly or quarterly shipments, and discounts on some of their products. One old favorite is Callaway, (callawaywinery.com), one of the first wineries in Temecula. Another is Leoness, (leonesscellars.com), also in Temecula. Further afield, Navarro Vineyard, (navarrowine. com), has a nice case sampler with one cent shipping. They are in Anderson Valley, Mendocino County. Shipped wine will probably come via UPS with an adult signature required. UPS will ask your name, and sign themselves, to minimize contact. The Wine Tasting Club has monthly tastings in members' homes, in better times. Dues are $12/year. Wine Tasting Club Navarro Vineyard Theatre Arts Ayiiiii! No Clubhouse means no room assignments. Theatre Arts stands shoulder-to- shoulder with the staff and residents in keeping each other healthy. Because the Clubhouse is closed, Actors' Workshop and Reader's Theatre have ceased gathering. For information, please contact Sally Benton by phone (602) 228-7541 or email (moki2@cox. net). Members only! Senior Moments Improv Troupe will be offering TWO shows Nov. 28 and Nov. 29. "We just hate turning away people from our sold out shows like poor little Tiny Tim out in the cold!" Stay tuned for further information. Since the Clubhouse is closed and there are no room assignments, members will be informed of any programming by email as things occur. Until this is all over, all performances are on hold! We're holding out hope that we can reserve Abravanel Hall in time for our June 1 Spring Dinner Dance, which will be open to the entire community, and Sept. 7 (Labor Day) – shhhhhh — we're planning a special surprise! Details for the above and any others referenced here will be sent to members via email, so please keep eyes and ears open. General meetings are usually held the first Monday at 7 pm in Abravanel Hall. Please check your email for exact location, date and time. Only members will be informed of upcoming live events. See how much bang you get for your $10 annual dues. Join Theatre Arts and participate in all of our entertainment and activities… leave your check in our envelope at the front desk when the Clubhouse reopens. We will accept membership checks at our events/activities, so don't miss out. Follow our activities online at http://www.ohccdg.wixsite.com/ theatrearts. Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time.
